Description

Indications

Valganciclovir is employed in the treatment of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis, an eye infection that can lead to blindness in individuals diagnosed with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). It is additionally used as a preventive measure against cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease for recipients of heart, kidney, or kidney-pancreas transplants who are at risk of developing CMV disease. Valganciclovir is classified as an antiviral medication, functioning by inhibiting the progression of CMV disease or retarding the growth of the CMV virus.

Uses and Dosage

Take this medication orally with food as directed by your doctor, typically 1 to 2 times daily. Swallow the tablets whole; do not crush or break them.

If you’re using the liquid form of this medication, shake the bottle well before each dose. Accurately measure your dose using the provided special measuring device, not a household spoon, as it may lead to an incorrect dose.

After handling this drug, ensure you wash your hands thoroughly. Avoid contact with crushed or broken tablets and the liquid form of this medication on your skin, mucous membranes, eyes, and prevent inhaling dust from the tablets. If contact occurs, cleanse the area thoroughly with soap and water. In case of contact with your eyes, rinse them extensively with plain water.

The dosage and duration of treatment depend on your medical condition, especially kidney function. In children, the dose is also determined by their body size. The doctor will monitor your child’s height and weight to ensure the correct dosage.

This medication is most effective when it maintains a constant level in your body. Administer it at evenly spaced intervals, and to help remember, take it at the same time(s) daily.

Adhere to your doctor’s prescription precisely. Do not alter the dosage or discontinue the medication, even briefly, unless your doctor instructs you to do so. Changing or skipping doses without your doctor’s consent may heighten the risk of side effects or exacerbate the infection.

Do not substitute ganciclovir for valganciclovir without consulting your doctor or pharmacist. The effects and dosages of ganciclovir and valganciclovir are not equivalent.
