Acetoxyl (benzoyl peroxide) is used to treat mild to moderate acne. It may also be used with other acne medications.

Do not take Acetoxyl (benzoyl peroxide) if you are allergic to any ingredient in Acetoxyl (benzoyl peroxide)

Before using Acetoxyl (benzoyl peroxide), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding if you are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medicine if you have any other medical condition avoid using the following skin products on the same area as Acetoxyl (benzoyl peroxide): any other topical acne product or skin product containing a peeling agent (such as resorcinol, salicylic acid, sulfur, or tretinoin); hair products that are irritating, such as permanents or hair removal products; skin products that cause sensitivity to the sun, such as those containing lime or spices; skin products containing a large amount of alcohol, such as astringents, shaving creams, or after-shave lotions; or skin products that are too drying or abrasive, such as some cosmetics, soaps, or skin cleansers.

Do not use Acetoxyl (benzoyl peroxide) in or around the eyes or lips, or inside the nose, or on sensitive areas of the neck. Spread Acetoxyl (benzoyl peroxide) away from these areas when applying. If Acetoxyl (benzoyl peroxide) gets on these areas, wash with water at once. Do not apply Acetoxyl (benzoyl peroxide) to windburned or sunburned skin or on open wounds, unless otherwise directed by your doctor. Acetoxyl (benzoyl peroxide) may bleach hair or colored fabrics.

Other: Blistering, crusting

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Acetoxyl (benzoyl peroxide) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Acetoxyl (benzoyl peroxide) is for external use only. Avoid contact with eyes, eyelids, lips, inside the nose, mucous membranes, and highly damaged or inflamed skin. If accidental contact occurs, rinse with water. Washing affected areas with a mild cleanser and water. Apply once daily for the first few days; twice daily after tolerance is determined, or as directed by your health care provider. Some of these products cause bleaching. Avoid contact with hair, fabrics, or carpeting. Acetoxyl (benzoyl peroxide) may produce a temporary feeling of warmth or slight stinging. If dryness, redness, or peeling does not occur in 3 days, increase use to 2 times daily. If dryness, redness, or peeling becomes excessive, use Acetoxyl (benzoyl peroxide) only once a day. Adjust use of Acetoxyl (benzoyl peroxide) from no application to twice daily use. Eventually you should be able to establish a routine. Expect dryness and peeling. If excessive redness or discomfort occurs, use Acetoxyl (benzoyl peroxide) only once a day or temporarily stop using it. Moisturizers, cool compresses, or topical steroids (such as hydrocortisone) may relieve these symptoms. Avoid sunlight, sunlamps, other acne medicine that is applied to the skin, and other sources of skin irritation unless directed by your health care provider. After Acetoxyl (benzoyl peroxide) is applied, you may use water-based cosmetics. Remove make-up before reapplying Acetoxyl (benzoyl peroxide). Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Acetoxyl (benzoyl peroxide). If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised to by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider.

Store Acetoxyl (benzoyl peroxide) between 59 and 86 degrees F. Avoid excessive heat, direct light and moisture.
