What are the side effects of Alkeran (melphalan)?

Most severe: Severe allergic reaction (redness, itching, swelling, hives, difficulty breathing); decreased ability to fight infection; infertility (male and female).

Most common: Nausea; vomiting; diarrhea; mouth sores; hair loss.
|

How should I take Alkeran (melphalan)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Alkeran (melphalan) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Do not take Alkeran (melphalan) without close medical supervision. Contact your health care provider if you experience skin rash, bleeding, fever, persistent cough, nausea, vomiting, absent menstrual cycle, weight loss, or unusual lumps or masses. Women of childbearing potential should avoid becoming pregnant while taking Alkeran (melphalan). Inform your doctor if you think you may be pregnant, are pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding while taking Alkeran (melphalan). Lab tests will be required to monitor therapy. Be sure to keep appointments. Do not change the dose or stop taking Alkeran (melphalan) unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Alkeran (melphalan). Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications or dietary supplements without talking with your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
