What is Bentyl (Bentylol) used for? |
Bentyl (Bentylol) is used to treat irritable bowel syndrome ((abdominal pain, accompanied by diarrhea and constipation associated with stress).

When should Bentyl (Bentylol) not be taken?
|
Do not take Bentyl (Bentylol) if you are allergic to any ingredient in Bentyl (Bentylol) if you have glaucoma if you have heart disease or increased heart rate if you have diarrhea, colon disease, blockage of the digestive or urinary tract, or ulcers of the colon if you have severe muscle weakness if you have prostate disease if you are breastfeeding if you have damage to the lining of your esophagus in infants less than 6 months of age |
What precautions should I follow when taking Bentyl (Bentylol) ?

Before using Bentyl (Bentylol), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant if you are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medicine if you have ulcers of the colon or an overactive thyroid if you have heart disease, heart failure, or other heart problems if you have a nervous system disease or an enlarged prostate if you have any other medical condition, such as liver or kidney disease |
What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Bentyl (Bentylol)?

Bentyl (Bentylol) may produce drowsiness or blurred vision. Therefore, activities that require full mental alertness like driving a car, operating machinery is not recommended. Use Bentyl (Bentylol) with extreme caution if you have have autonomic neuropathy (a nerve disorder); liver or kidney disease; hyperthyroidism; high blood pressure; coronary heart disease; congestive heart failure; rapid, irregular heartbeat; hiatal hernia (protrusion of part of the stomach through the diaphragm); or enlargement of the prostate gland. |
What are the side effects of Bentyl (Bentylol)?

Most severe: Severe allergic reaction; impotence; breathing problems.
|
|
Most common: Dry mouth; dizziness; blurred vision; nausea; lightheadedness; drowsiness; weakness; nervousness.
|
|
Other: Decreased sweating; suppressed milk production in nursing mothers.
|
How should I take Bentyl (Bentylol)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Bentyl (Bentylol) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Do not stop taking Bentyl (Bentylol) without checking with your health care provider. Avoid drinking alcohol and taking medicines (eg, tranquilizers, sedating antihistamines) while taking Bentyl (Bentylol). Bentyl (Bentylol) may cause dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision; patients should observe caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical skill. Avoid exposure to high temperatures while taking Bentyl (Bentylol). Decreased sweating caused by Bentyl (Bentylol) can lead to fever and heat stroke. If this occurs, stop taking Bentyl (Bentylol) and contact your doctor. Notify your doctor if skin rash, vomiting, urine retention, eye pain, blurred vision, irregular heartbeat, or constipation occurs. Drinking fluids, maintaining good oral hygiene, and sucking on hard sugarless candy can relieve dry mouth. Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Bentyl (Bentylol). Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider or pharmacist.
