What is Biaxin (clarithromycin) used for? |
Biaxin (clarithromycin) is used to treat infections such as bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis, tonsillitis, skin infections, and stomach ulcers caused by certain types of bacteria.

Do not take Biaxin (clarithromycin) if you are allergic to Biaxin (clarithromycin) or to similar medications you are currently taking pimozide, astemizole, or terfenadine |
What precautions should I follow when taking Biaxin (clarithromycin) ?

Before using Biaxin (clarithromycin), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any other prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement if you have severe kidney problems if you have a history of the blood disease porphyria if you have any other medical conditions |
What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Biaxin (clarithromycin)?

Dangerous and fatal arrhythmias have been reported if Biaxin (clarithromycin) is taken with cisapride (Propulsid), pimozide (Orap), or terfenadine (Seldane). |
What are the side effects of Biaxin (clarithromycin)?
|
|
Most severe: Severe diarrhea; stomach pain/cramps; bloody stools.
|
|
Most common: Diarrhea; nausea; abnormal taste; indigestion; stomach pain/discomfort; headache; vomiting; rash.
|
|
Other: Headache, asthenia, infection, back pain, pain and chest pain.
|
How should I take Biaxin (clarithromycin)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Biaxin (clarithromycin) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Carefully read the information provided with Biaxin (clarithromycin) and reread it each time you get this prescription refilled. Take Biaxin (clarithromycin) exactly as prescribed by you health care provider. Biaxin (clarithromycin) may be taken with or without food and may be taken with milk. Continue use until all the prescribed medicine has been taken. Failure to take all of Biaxin (clarithromycin) may prevent complete elimination of bacteria, allowing the infection to return. If severe diarrhea, stomach pain/cramps or bloody stools occur, contact your doctor at once. This could be a symptom of a serious side effect requiring immediate medical attention. Do not treat diarrhea without consulting your doctor. Do not stop taking Biaxin (clarithromycin) without talking with your health care provider. Do not take any over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. This includes any herbal preparation or dietary supplement. Patients with other medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Biaxin (clarithromycin). Do not use more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Contact your health care provider at once if you feel you have taken too much of Biaxin (clarithromycin). If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider.

Store Biaxin (clarithromycin) at room temperature 59 to 86 degrees F, away from light and in a tightly closed container. |
