What is Capoten (captopril) used for? |
Capoten (captopril) is used to treat high blood pressure. It may also be used for the treatment of heart failure or kidney problems related to diabetes, and after a heart attack.

Do not take Capoten (captopril) if you are allergic to any ingredient in Capoten (captopril) or to similar medications. |
What precautions should I follow when taking Capoten (captopril) ?

Before using Capoten (captopril), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine if you are taking blood thinners if you have stomach problems if you have peptic ulcers if you have any other medical condition like liver or kidney function impairment or heart problem |
What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Capoten (captopril)?

When used after the third month of pregnancy, Capoten (captopril) can cause injury and even death to the developing fetus. When pregnancy is detected, stop taking Capoten (captopril) as soon as possible. Take Capoten (captopril) 1 hour before meals. |
What are the side effects of Capoten (captopril)?

Most severe: Severe allergic reaction, chest pain, uneven or fast heart beat, palpitations, difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, numbness or tingling in your fingers or toes,
|
|
Most common: Rash; fever; itching; joint pain; taste disorder; coughing.
|
|
Other: Increased sensitivity to the sun, tiredness, cough, loss of taste
|
How should I take Capoten (captopril)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Capoten (captopril) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Capoten (captopril) should be taken one hour before meals according to your Health care providers directions. Capoten (captopril) may be less affective when used to treat high blood pressure in black patients. Contact your Health care provider at once and stop taking Capoten (captopril) if any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction occur: Swelling of face, eyes, lips, tongue, larynx, and hands and feet; difficulty in swallowing or breathing; hoarseness. Report any fever, sore throat, or swelling to your Health care provider. These are symptoms of serious side effects. Excessive sweating or dehydration, vomiting, or diarrhea can lead to a fall in blood pressure. Consult your Health care provider. Do not use potassium-sparing diuretics, potassium supplements, or potassium salt substitutes, unless directed by a physician. Heart failure patients should increase their physical activity slowly. Patients being treated for high blood pressure often feel tired or rundown for a few weeks after beginning therapy. Continue taking Capoten (captopril) even though you may feel quite "normal." Contact your Health care provider or pharmacist about any new symptoms. Capoten (captopril) may produce dizziness; patients should observe caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness or physical dexterity. Do not stop taking Capoten (captopril) without checking with your Health care provider. Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your Health care provider or health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Capoten (captopril). Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medicines without talking with your Health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your Health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your Health care provider or pharmacist.

Store Capoten (captopril) at room temperature in a cool dry place, protect from heat and light. Keep all medicines out of the reach of children and pets. |
