Do not take/give Carbatrol (not available in Canada) if you and/or your child are allergic to any ingredient in Carbatrol (not available in Canada) you and/or your child have liver disease you and/or your child have a history of bone marrow depression you and/or your child have a history of the blood disorder porphyria or other serious blood disorders you and/or your child have heart block if you and/or your child are taking amitriptyline, trimipramine, imipramine, or similar medications you and/or your child are currently taking or have taken a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor within the last 14 days

Most common:  Dizziness; drowsiness; headache; unsteadiness on the feet; double vision; nausea; vomiting; weakness; tiredness; rapid eye movement; dry mouth and throat.
Other:  Sensitivity to sunlight; diarrhea; constipation; mouth sores; swelling of the tongue; inflammation of the eyelids; changes in taste; ringing in the ears; changes in hearing; change in pitch perception; joint pain; muscle pain or cramps; fever; depression with agitation; talkativeness; agitation; loss of appetite; restlessness; confusion.

Birth control pills may not be as effective while taking Carbatrol (not available in Canada). Breakthrough bleeding and unintended pregnancies have occurred. Talk with your health care provider about alternative or back-up methods of birth control. Contact your doctor immediately if pregnancy occurs.
