Carbatrol (not available in Canada) is used alone or with other medications to control certain types of seizures, to relieve pain in patients with nerve pain in the face, jaw, tongue, and throat, and to treat bipolar disorders.

Do not take/give Carbatrol (not available in Canada) if you and/or your child are allergic to any ingredient in Carbatrol (not available in Canada) you and/or your child have liver disease you and/or your child have a history of bone marrow depression you and/or your child have a history of the blood disorder porphyria or other serious blood disorders you and/or your child have heart block if you and/or your child are taking amitriptyline, trimipramine, imipramine, or similar medications you and/or your child are currently taking or have taken a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor within the last 14 days

Before using Carbatrol (not available in Canada), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you and/or your child are taking any other prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement if you and/or your child have increased pressure in the eye if you and/or your child have difficulty urinating if you and/or your child have a blood disorder if you and/or your child have a history of seizures if you and/or your child have a history of heart disease or congestive heart failure if you and/or your child have liver or kidney problems if you and/or your child have a history of bizarre behavior if you have a history of alcoholism if you and/or your child have any other medical condition

Other:  Sensitivity to sunlight; diarrhea; constipation; mouth sores; swelling of the tongue; inflammation of the eyelids; changes in taste; ringing in the ears; changes in hearing; change in pitch perception; joint pain; muscle pain or cramps; fever; depression with agitation; talkativeness; agitation; loss of appetite; restlessness; confusion.

How much medicine you take/give and how often you take/give it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Carbatrol (not available in Canada) you are taking/giving, talk with your health care provider. Carefully read the information provided with Carbatrol (not available in Canada) and reread it each time you get this prescription refilled. Take or give Carbatrol (not available in Canada) exactly as prescribed by your health care provider. Swallow tablets whole with a little liquid during or after a meal or as directed by your health care provider. Do not chew the tablets. Carbatrol (not available in Canada) is not to be used to relieve headaches or minor pains in the face. Contact your doctor at once if any of the following symptoms occur while taking Carbatrol (not available in Canada): Seizures, fever, sore throat, rash, ulcers in the mouth, easy bruising, bleeding, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Stop taking or giving Carbatrol (not available in Canada) and contact your health care provider at once if a serious skin reaction (flushing; rash; hives; itching; changes in skin color; acne; purple patches under the skin; hair loss; excessive sweating) occurs. Contact your health care provider at once if any of the following occur: Drowsiness; headache; unsteadiness on the feet; double vision; nausea; vomiting. Birth control pills may not be as effective while taking Carbatrol (not available in Canada). Breakthrough bleeding and unintended pregnancies have occurred. Talk with your health care provider about alternative or back-up methods of birth control. Contact your doctor immediately if pregnancy occurs. Serious birth defects have occurred in children born to women taking these kinds of medicines. Carbatrol (not available in Canada) may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Carbatrol (not available in Canada). Carbatrol (not available in Canada) may cause sensitivity to sunlight. Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and other ultraviolet light. Use sunscreens and wear protective clothing until tolerance is determined. Do not take or give Carbatrol (not available in Canada) if you and/or your child are currently taking or have taken an MAO inhibitor within the last 14 days. If you are uncertain whether your other medicines contain an MAO inhibitor, check with your health care provider. Lab tests and eye exams may be required to monitor therapy. Be sure to keep appointments. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking or giving Carbatrol (not available in Canada). Do not change the dose or stop taking/giving Carbatrol (not available in Canada) without checking with your doctor. Stopping Carbatrol (not available in Canada) suddenly may cause your symptoms to increase. Do not take or give more medication than prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Contact your health care provider at once if you feel you have taken or given too much of Carbatrol (not available in Canada). Do not take or give any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your doctor. This includes any herbal preparations or dietary supplements. If a dose is missed, take or give it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, restart medication and contact your doctor or pharmacist.
