What is Cardura (doxazosin) used for? |
Cardura (doxazosin) is used to treat high blood pressure in adults. it is also used to treat urinary problems caused by swelling of the prostate in aging males. Doctors may prescribe for other reasons.

When should Cardura (doxazosin) not be taken?

Do not take Cardura (doxazosin) if you are allergic to any ingredient of Cardura (doxazosin) or similar medicines (eg, prazosin, terazosin) |
What precautions should I follow when taking Cardura (doxazosin) ?

Before using Cardura (doxazosin), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine if you have any other medical condition, such as kidney or liver function impairment |
What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Cardura (doxazosin)?

Cardura (doxazosin) can cause you to become faint, dizzy, or light-headed, particularly when first standing up. You should avoid driving or any hazardous tasks where injury could occur for 24 hours after taking the first dose of Cardura (doxazosin), after your dose has been increased, or if Cardura (doxazosin) has been stopped and then restarted. |
What are the side effects of Cardura (doxazosin)?

Most severe: First dose effect- Dizziness, fainting and falls are possible due to lower blood pressure. These symptoms are more likely to occur when rising quickly from a seated or lying position, if the dose is increased, or if therapy is stopped and then restarted. To lessen the chance of problems, the first dose should be given at bedtime. Sit or lie down if you feel lightheaded. Males may experience sustained, painful erection (priapism).

Most common: Fatigue; dizziness; swelling; difficulty breathing; weight gain; drowsiness; general body discomfort.

Other: (Rarely) Abnormal thinking, agitation, allergic reactions, altered sense of smell, amnesia, blood in the urine, breast development in men, breast pain, breathing difficulties, changeable emotions, changes in taste, chest pain, confusion, coughing, decreased sensation, dizziness when standing up, dry skin, earache, fainting, fecal incontinence, fever, frequent urination, gout, hair loss, heart attack, hives, inability to concentrate, inability to tolerate light, increased appetite, increased thirst, infection, loss of appetite, loss of sense of personal identity, migraine headache, morbid dreams, nighttime urination, pallor, prolonged erections, rapid pounding heartbeat, sexual problems, sinus inflammation, slight or partial paralysis, slow heartbeat, sore throat, stroke, tremors, twitching, urinary disorders, vomiting, weight gain, weight loss, wheezing, yellow skin and eyes.

How should I take Cardura (doxazosin)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Cardura (doxazosin) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Do not stop taking Cardura (doxazosin) without checking with your doctor. Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. The initial dose is given once daily in the morning or at night (with or without food) and may be increased by your doctor over time. Improvements in urinary flow problems (if used for swelling of the prostate) should occur within 1 to 2 weeks. Cardura (doxazosin) may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Use caution. Avoid hazardous tasks for at least 24 hours after taking the first dose, missing doses, increasing the dose or taking other medications. Lab and blood pressure testing may be required. Keep appointments. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your doctor. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
