What is Carnitor (levocarnitine) used for? |
Carnitor (levocarnitine) is used to treat primary carnitine deficiency and for the treatment of patients with internal metabolism errors that cause secondary carnitine deficiency.

What precautions should I follow when taking Carnitor (levocarnitine) ?

Before using Carnitor (levocarnitine), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any other prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplements if you have a history of seizures if you have kidney, heart or liver problems if you have any other medical condition like history of headaches, swollen ankles or problems with fluid retention |

What are the side effects of Carnitor (levocarnitine)?

Most severe: Seizures; serious allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue).
|
|
Most common: Nausea; vomiting; stomach cramps; diarrhea, fast heart rate, swollen ankles, tingling in the hands or feet.
|
|
Other: Muscle weakness; body odor.
|
How should I take Carnitor (levocarnitine)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often it is taken depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Carnitor (levocarnitine) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Take Carnitor (levocarnitine) exactly as prescribed. Take Carnitor (levocarnitine) with a meal or after a meal. Do not chew the tablet. Lab tests may be required to monitor therapy. Be sure to keep appointments. Do not take any over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. This icludes any herbal prepration or dietary supplement. Patients with other medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Carnitor (levocarnitine). Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised to by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, restart medication and advise your health care provider at your next appointment.
