Chloroquine Phosphate (chloroquin phosphate) is used to treat extraintestinal amebiasis (an infection of the intestines that spreads to other parts of the body including the liver and skin) and acute attacks of certain strains of malaria.

Before using Chloroquine Phosphate (chloroquin phosphate), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding if you are taking any other prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement if you have psoriasis if you have liver problems if you regularly consume large amounts of alcohol if you have glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency if you have any other medical condition |

What are the side effects of Chloroquine Phosphate (chloroquin phosphate)?

Most severe: Severe vision problems; seizures; deafness; reduced hearing in patients with preexisting hearing problems.
|

Most common: Loss of appetite; nausea; vomiting; stomach cramps; diarrhea; skin eruptions; skin color changes; itching; hair loss; headache; ringing in the ears; psoriasis.

Other: Bleaching of body hair, blue-black coloration of the skin, nails and hair

How should I take Chloroquine Phosphate (chloroquin phosphate)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Chloroquine Phosphate (chloroquin phosphate) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Carefully read the information provided with Chloroquine Phosphate (chloroquin phosphate) and reread it each time you get this prescription refilled. Take Chloroquine Phosphate (chloroquin phosphate) exactly as prescribed by your health care provider. Stop taking Chloroquine Phosphate (chloroquin phosphate) and contact your doctor at once if you experience any changes in vision, including light flashes or streaks. Stop taking Chloroquine Phosphate (chloroquin phosphate) and contact your health care provider at once if you experience muscle weakness, especially in the knees and ankles. Lab tests and eye exams will be required to monitor therapy. Be sure to keep appointments. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Chloroquine Phosphate (chloroquin phosphate). Do not stop taking Chloroquine Phosphate (chloroquin phosphate) without checking with your doctor. If a sensitivity reaction occurs, contact your doctor. Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Contact your health care provider at once if you feel you have taken too much of Chloroquine Phosphate (chloroquin phosphate). Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. This includes any herbal preparations or dietary supplements. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
