What is Cogentin (benztropine) used for? |
Cogentin (benztropine) is used to treat the symptoms of parkinsonism, and medicine-induced disorders that affect muscle movements. It may be used with other medicines.

Do not take or give Cogentin (benztropine) if you are allergic to any ingredient in Cogentin (benztropine) the patient is under 3 years of age you have tardive dyskinesia |
What precautions should I follow when taking Cogentin (benztropine) ?

Before using Cogentin (benztropine), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine if you have any other medical condition like heart problems (tachycardia), glaucoma, prostatic hypertrophy and neurological problems |
What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Cogentin (benztropine)?

Cogentin (benztropine) may impair mental and/or physical alertness required for performance of hazardous tasks, such as operating machinery or driving a motor vehicle. Cogentin (benztropine) can cause severe reduction in sweating (anhidrosis) especially if used with atropine. Severe anhidrosis and fatal hyperthermia have occurred during treatment with Cogentin (benztropine). |
What are the side effects of Cogentin (benztropine)?

Most severe: Intestinal paralysis; increased body temperatures.
|
|
Most common: Weak or stiff muscles; rapid heart beat; nausea; vomiting; dry mouth; constipation; confusion; disorentation; impaired memory; hallucinations; blurred vision; nervousness; depression; listlessness; numbness of fingers; dilated pupils; urinary retention; painful urination; allergic reaction; heat stroke.

Other: Skin rash, blurred vision, dilated pupils, urinary retention, dysuria.

How should I take Cogentin (benztropine)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depend on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Cogentin (benztropine) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Cogentin (benztropine) should be given by a health care professional who is experienced in the use of Cogentin (benztropine). Do not stop taking Cogentin (benztropine) suddenly. Cogentin (benztropine) should be reduced or stopped gradually. Use caution when driving or performing other tasks requiring mental alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Cogentin (benztropine) can reduce the ability to sweat. Cogentin (benztropine) should be taken with caution during hot weather by those who are chronically ill, suffer from alcoholism, have a central nervous system disease, or work outdoors. If dry mouth occurs with difficulty swallowing or speaking or loss of appetite and weight, reduce the amount of medicine you are taking or stop taking Cogentin (benztropine) temporarily. If a skin rash develops and cannot be controlled by a reduced dose of Cogentin (benztropine), stop taking Cogentin (benztropine). Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Cogentin (benztropine). Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider.
