What is Cortate (hydrocortisone) used for? |
Cortate (hydrocortisone) is used to relieve itching, allergy, and inflammation of the skin.

Before using Cortate (hydrocortisone), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding if you have any other medical condition |
What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Cortate (hydrocortisone)?
|
Cortate (hydrocortisone) is for external use only. Do not use Cortate (hydrocortisone) in or around the eyes. Do not apply Cortate (hydrocortisone) to large areas of the body. Do not use to treat vulvar itching associated with vaginal discharge. Use only for 7 days maximum. If symptoms persist beyond 7 days or return after discontinuing use of the product, consult your health care provider. |
What are the side effects of Cortate (hydrocortisone)?

Most severe: Severe skin irritation, rash, sensitivity to light
|

Most common: Burning; itching; irritation; dryness; inflamed hair follicles; excessive hair growth; acne; loss of skin color; rash; secondary infection; skin wasting; streaks in the skin.

Other: Photosensitivity

How should I take Cortate (hydrocortisone)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depend on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Cortate (hydrocortisone) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Cortate (hydrocortisone) is for external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes. Wash or soak the affected area before using Cortate (hydrocortisone). This may increase medicine penetration. Apply a thin film of medicine to the affected area 2 to 4 times daily or as directed by your health care provider. Use Cortate (hydrocortisone) for the condition in which it was prescribed. Do not cover, bandage, or wrap the area being treated unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Report any sign of irritation or other side effects to your health care provider, especially under an occlusive dressing. Tight-fitting diapers or plastic pants should not be used on a child being treated in the diaper area. Lab tests may be required to monitor therapy. Be sure to keep appointments. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Cortate (hydrocortisone). If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised to by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider.
