What is DDAVP (desmopressin) used for? |
DDAVP (desmopressin) helps to prevent or control frequent urination, excessive thirst, and dehydration associated with decreased levels of vasopressin.

What precautions should I follow when taking DDAVP (desmopressin) ?

Before using DDAVP (desmopressin), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine if you are taking any herbal products, if you are taking blood thinners if you have stomach problems if you have peptic ulcers if you have any other medical condition like liver or kidney function impairment, heart ot lung problem, if you have blood clots, cystic fibrosis, heart disease, including history of a heart attack or heart failure, high blood pressure |

What are the side effects of DDAVP (desmopressin)?

Most severe: Signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction: rash, itching, hives, difficulty breathing, confusion, drowsiness, nausea, persistent or severe, rapid weight gain, retaining water, severe or continuing headaches, seizures, weakness

Most common: Flushing (reddening) of the skin, headache, nausea, pain or irritation at the injection site, stomach pain or cramps, vaginal area pain

How should I take DDAVP (desmopressin)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depend on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of DDAVP (desmopressin) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Do not stop taking DDAVP (desmopressin) without checking with your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking DDAVP (desmopressin). Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider or pharmacist. A health care professional in a hospital or clinic setting may give DDAVP (desmopressin) or you may be given DDAVP (desmopressin) for home use. You will be instructed in the proper injection technique. Make sure you understand how to prepare and give DDAVP (desmopressin) before giving it at home. Follow the directions exactly. Always wash your hands before use. Only use a disposable syringe once. Always change the site for the injection under the skin. Let the solution warm to room temperature before you use it. Throw away any unused portion.
