What are the side effects of Elmiron (pentosan polysulfate)?

Most severe: Elmiron (pentosan polysulfate) is usually well tolerated.
|
|
Most common: Hair loss; diarrhea; nausea; headache; rash; indigestion.
|
|
Other: Edema, pelvic pain, malaise, sinusitis, sweating, gastritis, leukopenia, depression, rhinitis, lacrimation, angina pectoris, chronic myelogenous leukemia, prostate cancer, loss of appetite, subarachnoid hemorrhage, epistaxis, gum hemorrhage, menorrhagia, hematuria.

How should I take Elmiron (pentosan polysulfate)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount andperor frequency of Elmiron (pentosan polysulfate) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Take Elmiron (pentosan polysulfate) with water at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. You should be rechecked by your health care provider after 3 months of taking Elmiron (pentosan polysulfate). If improvements are not seen, Elmiron (pentosan polysulfate) may be continued for another 3 months. Elmiron (pentosan polysulfate) may cause prolonged bleeding. Do not stop taking Elmiron (pentosan polysulfate) without checking with your doctor. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Elmiron (pentosan polysulfate). Do not take more medicine than is prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your doctor. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
