What is Eryc (erythromycin) used for? |
Eryc (erythromycin) is used to treat infections caused by certain bacteria. It is also used to treat certain sexually transmitted diseases.

Do not take/give Eryc (erythromycin) if you and/or your child are allergic to any ingredient in Eryc (erythromycin) you and/or your child are currently taking terfenadine or astemizole |
What precautions should I follow when taking Eryc (erythromycin) ?

Before using Eryc (erythromycin), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you and/or your child are taking any prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement if you and/or your child have impaired liver function if you and/or your child have myasthenia gravis (severe muscle weakness) if you and/or your child have any other medical condition |
What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Eryc (erythromycin)?

Eryc (erythromycin) can cause significant hepatic dysfunction and colitis. If symptoms suggestive of these diseases occur, discontinue treatment with Eryc (erythromycin) and seek immediate medical attention. |
What are the side effects of Eryc (erythromycin)?
|
|
Most severe: Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, tongue, and lips); yellowing of skin or eyes; severe diarrhea; bloody stools; stomach pain/cramps; irregular heartbeat.

Most common: Nausea; vomiting; stomach pain; diarrhea; loss of appetite.
|

Other: Second infection.
|
How should I take Eryc (erythromycin)?
|
How much medicine you take/give and how often you take/give it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Eryc (erythromycin) you are taking/giving, talk with your health care provider. Carefully read the information provided with Eryc (erythromycin) and reread it each time you get this prescription refilled. Take/give Eryc (erythromycin) exactly as directed by your health care provider. Eryc (erythromycin) may be taken with or without food. If nausea or stomach upset occur, take it with food. Contact your health care provider at once if severe rash, itching, or hives develop. If severe diarrhea, stomach cramps/pain, or bloody stools occur, contact your doctor at once. This could be a sign of a serious side effect requiring instant medical attention. Do not treat diarrhea without talking with your health care provider. Long-term or repeated use of Eryc (erythromycin) may cause a second infection. You may need to stop taking/giving Eryc (erythromycin) and start another medication to treat the second infection. Contact your doctor if you suspect a second infection. Continue to use until all of the prescribed medicine has been taken. Failure to take all of Eryc (erythromycin) may prevent complete elimination of the bacteria, allowing the infection to return. Lab tests may be required to monitor therapy. Be sure to keep appointments. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking/giving Eryc (erythromycin). Do not stop taking/giving Eryc (erythromycin) without checking with your health care provider. Do not take/give more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Contact your health care provider at once if you feel you have taken/given too much of Eryc (erythromycin). Do not take/give any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. This includes herbal preparations or dietary supplements. If a dose is missed, take/give it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
