What is Folic Acid (folate) used for? |
Folic Acid (folate) is used to treat anemia (low red blood cell count) due to a deficiency of folic acid which may be caused by digestive disorders, poor diet, pregnancy, infancy, or childhood.

What precautions should I follow when taking Folic Acid (folate) ?

Before using Folic Acid (folate), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine if you are an alcoholic if you have epilepsy if you have anemia not caused by folic acid deficiency or caused by vitamin B12 deficiency if you have any disease that requires anticonvulsant or antimetabolite medications if you have any other medical condition |

Folic Acid (folate) should be used with caution when using phenytoin, isoniazid, primidone, barbiturates, oral contraceptives, ethanol, sulfasalazine, cycloserine, glutethamide, methotrexate, pyrimethamine, trimethoprin and triamterene. |
What are the side effects of Folic Acid (folate)?

Most severe: Difficulty breathing; increase in seizures in certain patients.
|
|
Most common: Flushing; rash; itching; general body discomfort; loss of appetite; nausea; stomach bloating; gas; bitter or bad taste in mouth.
|
|
Other: Change in sleeping patterns; difficulty concentrating; irritability; hyperactivity; excitability; depression; confusion; impaired judgment.
|
How should I take Folic Acid (folate)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated, your age, and weight. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Folic Acid (folate) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Folic Acid (folate) may cause difficulty concentrating or impaired judgment. Lab test will be required to monitor therapy. Be sure to keep appointments. Do not stop taking Folic Acid (folate) without checking with your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Folic Acid (folate). Do not take more medicine than is prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
