Hectorol (not available in Canada) is used to manage an overactive parathyroid gland, metabolic bone disease, and low blood calcium levels in patients undergoing kidney dialysis or with severe chronic kidney disease who are not yet on dialysis. It is also used to manage low blood calcium levels in patients with an underactive parathyroid due to a number of conditions following surgery.

Do not take Hectorol (not available in Canada) if you are allergic to any ingredient in Hectorol (not available in Canada) you have high blood calcium levels you have evidence of vitamin D toxicity

Before using Hectorol (not available in Canada), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any other prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement if you are taking heart medications, cholestyramine, phenytoin, or thiazide if you have any other medical condition

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated, your age, and weight. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Hectorol (not available in Canada) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Take Hectorol (not available in Canada) exactly as prescribed by your health care provider. Carefully follow the dietary guidelines given to you by your health care provider. The US Recommended Dietary Allowance for calcium in adults is 800 to 1200 mg per day. Drink plenty of fluids while taking Hectorol (not available in Canada). Avoid taking antacids that contain magnesium while you are taking Hectorol (not available in Canada). Notify your doctor immediately if any of the following occur: Weakness; headache; drowsiness; muscle pain; bone pain; metallic taste. These are early signs that your vitamin D level may be too high. Hectorol (not available in Canada) may cause drowsiness. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Hectorol (not available in Canada) may cause sensitivity to sunlight. Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and other ultraviolet light. Use sunscreens and wear protective clothing until tolerance is determined. Lab tests may be required to monitor therapy. Be sure to keep appointments. Do not stop taking Hectorol (not available in Canada) without checking with your doctor. Do not take more medication than prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Hectorol (not available in Canada). Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your doctor. This includes any herbal preparations or dietary supplements. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, restart medication and contact your doctor or pharmacist.
