What is Heptovir (lamivudine) used for? |
Heptovir (lamivudine), in combination with other HIV medications, is for the treatment of HIV infection in adults and children 3 months of age and older.

Do not take Heptovir (lamivudine) if you are allergic to any ingredient in Heptovir (lamivudine) or to similar medications. |
What precautions should I follow when taking Heptovir (lamivudine) ?

Before using Heptovir (lamivudine), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine if you have impairment of heart, lung, liver and kidney functions |

High levels of lactic acid in the blood and severe liver problems that can cause death have been reported with the use of HIV infection medications alone or in combination with Heptovir (lamivudine) and other HIV medicines |
What are the side effects of Heptovir (lamivudine)?
|

Most severe: Inflammation of the pancreas (stomach pain/tenderness, nausea, vomiting), sensation or pins and needles; skin rash, stabbing pain, tingling, burning, numbness, or pain in the hands, arms, feet, or legs; unsteadiness or awkwardness.

Most common: Adults: nausea; headache; fatigue; weakness; diarrhea; cough; fever; chills; vomiting; stomach pain; nasal problems; nerve disease; muscle pain; appetite loss; sleeplessness; sleep disorders; rash; indigestion; joint pain; dizziness; depression. Children: fever; cough; rash; nasal discharge or congestion; abnormal breathing; wheezing; nausea; vomiting; diarrhea; ear problems.

Other: Acid or sour stomach; belching; cough; heartburn; indigestion; stomach discomfort or upset

How should I take Heptovir (lamivudine)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often it is taken depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Heptovir (lamivudine) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Heptovir (lamivudine) is to be taken orally with or without food. Heptovir (lamivudine) should be taken with other HIV medications for maximum effect. Parents or guardians of children taking Heptovir (lamivudine) should monitor their children for signs and symptoms of pancreas inflammation (such as stomach pain, tenderness, and vomiting). The long-term effects of Heptovir (lamivudine) are not known at this time. Pregnant women should be advised of the risks of using Heptovir (lamivudine) while they are expecting, including the risk of cancer and the possible transmission of the HIV infection to the unborn child. Heptovir (lamivudine) offers no protection from the transmission of HIV to others through sexual contact or blood contamination. Heptovir (lamivudine) is not a cure for HIV infection (the virus that causes AIDS). Patients may continue to experience illnesses/infections associated with HIV infection. Patient should remain under the care of their doctor. HIV-infected mothers should not breastfeed their infants because of the risk of transmitting the HIV infection. Heptovir (lamivudine) may cause dizziness. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Do not stop taking Heptovir (lamivudine) without checking with your doctor. Do not take more medication than prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your doctor. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
