What is Hyalgan (sodium hyaluronate) used for? |
Hyalgan (sodium hyaluronate) is used to provide relief of pain due to osteoarthritis of the knee. It is used for patients who do not get adequate relief from simple painkillers, exercise, and physical therapy.

When should Hyalgan (sodium hyaluronate) not be taken?
|
Do not use Hyalgan (sodium hyaluronate) if you are allergic to any ingredient in Hyalgan (sodium hyaluronate), if you have irritated or infected skin at the injection site. |
What precautions should I follow when taking Hyalgan (sodium hyaluronate) ?

Before using Hyalgan (sodium hyaluronate), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medicine if you have any other medical condition like heart disease, lung disease, impairment of kidney or liver functions. |
What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Hyalgan (sodium hyaluronate)?

As with any injection, you may feel temporary minor pain at the injection site. To help make your injection as comfortable as possible, your doctor may inject a local anesthetic beforehand. |
What are the side effects of Hyalgan (sodium hyaluronate)?

Most severe: Severe allergic reaction (hives, shortness of breath, palpitation, tightness in chest), redness, burning, itching
|
|
Most common: Injection-site pain, swelling, heat and/or redness, rash, itching, or bruising around the joint.

How should I take Hyalgan (sodium hyaluronate)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Hyalgan (sodium hyaluronate) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. For 48 hours following the injection, avoid strenuous or weight bearing activities (such as tennis, running, standing, or heavy lifting) for a long periods of time. To reduce discomfort associated with osteoarthritis, avoid activities that cause excess pain in the joints. Do not share Hyalgan (sodium hyaluronate) with others for whom it was not prescribed. Do not use Hyalgan (sodium hyaluronate) for other health conditions. Keep this product as well as syringes and needles, out of the reach of children. Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials. Dispose of properly after use. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist to explain local regulations for selecting an appropriate container and properly disposing of the container when it is full.Do not take more medication than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Hyalgan (sodium hyaluronate). Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider or pharmacist.

Store Hyalgan (sodium hyaluronate) in a dry place at room temperature between 59° - 86°F. Keep out of reach of children and pets |
