Before using Kayexalate (sodium polystyrene sulfonate), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, plan on becoming pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine if you have any other medical condition |
What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Kayexalate (sodium polystyrene sulfonate)?

Follow the dietary plan provided by you health care provider. Do not use a salt substitue or other potassium supplement without checking with your health care provider. Before taking any new medicine, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your health care provider or pharmacist. This includes any medicines that contain magnesium hydroxide or calcium carbonate. If you miss a dose of Kayexalate (sodium polystyrene sulfonate), take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do NOT take 2 doses at once. |
What are the side effects of Kayexalate (sodium polystyrene sulfonate)?

Most severe: Swelling of feet or hands; change in heartbeat; unexplained muscle weakness; muscle cramps; or change in emotions, mood, or behavior.
|
|
Most common: Appetite loss; nausea; vomiting; constipation.
|
|
Other: Diarrhea.
|
How should I take Kayexalate (sodium polystyrene sulfonate)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated, your age, and weight. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Kayexalate (sodium polystyrene sulfonate) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Kayexalate (sodium polystyrene sulfonate) should be freshly prepared with water or syrup. Do not store the mixed solution for more than 24 hours. Kayexalate (sodium polystyrene sulfonate) can be taken orally, as an enema, or through a plastic feeding tube. Do not heat Kayexalate (sodium polystyrene sulfonate). If you experience constipation while taking Kayexalate (sodium polystyrene sulfonate), take sorbitol syrup to soften stools. Do not stop taking Kayexalate (sodium polystyrene sulfonate) without checking with your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Kayexalate (sodium polystyrene sulfonate). Do not take more medication than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider or health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider or pharmacist.
