 Lindane Information

Formulation:

Lotion (PMS)

Manufacturer:

Pharmascience

Alternate Names:

Lindane Lotion, Lindane Shampoo

What is Lindane used for?

Lindane is used to treat scabies only after safer medicines have failed (such as permethrin or crotamiton), or if safer medicines caused side effects. It works by killing the tiny insects (mites), that cause scabies, and their eggs.

When should Lindane not be taken?

Do not use Lindane if you are allergic to any ingredient in Lindane, if you have broken or irritated skin if you have a history of seizures or other neurological disorders.

What precautions should I follow when taking Lindane ?

Before using Lindane, tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medicine if you have any other medical condition like heart disease, lung disease, impairment of kidney or liver functions if you have a history of skin conditions (e.g. psoriasis, dermatitis), broken/crusted skin, HIV infection, serious head injury, seizures, brain tumors, severe liver disease (cirrhosis), alcohol abuse, or sudden stopping of regular alcohol or sedative use.

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Lindane?

Lindane should only be used after safer medicines have failed, or if safer medicines caused side effects. Infrequently, lindane has caused seizures (and possibly death) after prolonged or repeated use. Rare (possibly fatal) nervous system reactions such as seizures may even occur after correct one-time use of lindane. Lindane should not be used in premature infants or those with poorly controlled seizure disorders. Lindane should be used with caution in infants, children, the elderly, those with other skin conditions (such as dermatitis or psoriasis), and those who weigh less than 110 pounds (50 kg) as they may be at higher risk of side effects.

What are the side effects of Lindane?

Most severe: Vomiting, seizures, dizziness, or drowsiness.
Most common: Skin rash, stinging, burning, or redness of skin.
Other: None

Read the patient instruction sheet and Medication Guide before use, and ask your doctor or pharmacist about any information that is unclear to you. Itching may occur either after successful treatment or with treatment failures. Avoid re-applying lindane within a few months after use (consult your doctor or pharmacist for details). Inform your health care provider of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. Do not use other creams, lotions, ointments, or oils immediately before or after applying lindane. Oil-based products may increase the absorption of lindane, increasing the risk of side effects. Additional monitoring of your dose or condition may be needed if you are taking medicines which might increase seizure risk (decrease seizure threshold) when combined with lindane, such as phenothiazines (e.g., thioridazine), tricyclic antidepressants (e.g., amitriptyline), isoniazid (INH), or theophylline among others. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for details. Do not stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. Use of Lindane is not recommended if you have a history of a poorly controlled seizure disorder. Additional monitoring of your dose or your condition may be needed if you have a history of skin conditions (e.g. psoriasis, dermatitis), broken/crusted skin, HIV infection, serious head injury, seizures, brain tumors, severe liver disease (cirrhosis), alcohol abuse, or sudden stopping of regular alcohol or sedative use. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about using Lindane. Follow the directions for using for using Lindane provided by your doctor or pharmacist. Lindane comes with a Medication Guide and instruction sheet. Read it carefully before using Lindane. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist any questions that you may have about Lindane. Shake well before using Lindane. If you are applying lindane to another person, wear disposable gloves (made of nitrile, latex with neoprene, or sheer vinyl). Do not use natural latex gloves because more lindane can penetrate that glove. Make sure your skin is clean and does not have other lotions, creams, or oils on it. Oils and lotions can increase the absorption of lindane through your skin and into your bloodstream, which increases the risk of serious side effects. Wait for at least one hour after bathing/showering before you put lindane lotion on your skin. Wet or warm skin can also increase the absorption of lindane into your bloodstream. Using a toothbrush, put lindane under your fingernails (scabies mites prefer that area), and trim them short. Discard the toothbrush into the trash immediately out of the reach of children and pets. Do not use it in your mouth. Apply Lindane to your skin in a very thin layer. Apply from the neck down to the bottoms of your feet unless your doctor tells you otherwise. Do not cover the skin with non-breathable material, such as plastic diapers or clothes, tight clothes, or blankets. Other persons should avoid skin contact with you while you are using lindane. Leave Lindane on the skin for 8 to 12 hours. Do not leave it on the skin more than 12 hours. Leaving it

How should Lindane be stored?

Store Lindane in a dry place at room temperature between 59° - 86°F. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Keep away from direct heat and light. Do not freeze
