Lopressor (metoprolol tartrate) is used to treat high blood pressure, chest pain, and heart attack. It may be used alone or in combination with other medications for the treatment of high blood pressure.

Do not take Lopressor (metoprolol tartrate) if you are allergic to any ingredient in Lopressor (metoprolol tartrate) you have certain heart problems

Before using Lopressor (metoprolol tartrate), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement if you have asthma or other lung diseases if you will be having major surgery if you have diabetes if you have an overactive thyroid if you have heart failure if you have low blood pressure if you have impaired liver function if you have a history of allergic reactions if you have any other medical condition

Do not stop Lopressor (metoprolol tartrate) abruptly. This can cause increased chest pain and heart attack. Dosage should be gradually reduced. Lopressor (metoprolol tartrate) does not cure high blood pressure, it merely keeps it under control.

Other:  Cold hands and feet; nausea; dry mouth; stomach pain; constipation; gas; heartburn; muscle aches; blurred vision; ringing in the ears; hair loss; dry eyes. If you suddenly stop taking Lopressor (metoprolol tartrate), sharp chest pain or heart attack may occur. The dosage should be gradually reduced over a period of 1 to 2 weeks and you should be closely watched, particularly if you have certain kinds of heart disease. If chest pain becomes more severe or if heart problems develop, Lopressor (metoprolol tartrate) should be restarted at once, at least temporarily, and other measures to help manage unstable chest pain should be taken. Because heart artery disease is common and you may not know you have it, it may be safer not to stop Lopressor (metoprolol tartrate) quickly if you are only being treated for high blood pressure.

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depend on many factors, including the condition being treated, your age, and weight. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Lopressor (metoprolol tartrate) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Take Lopressor (metoprolol tartrate) on a regular schedule, preferably with or immediately after meals. Contact your doctor if you have any breathing problems. Inform your dentist or physician that you are taking Lopressor (metoprolol tartrate) before undergoing any type of surgery. Lopressor (metoprolol tartrate) may cause dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Patients being treated for high blood pressure often feel tired or rundown for a few weeks after beginning therapy. Continue taking Lopressor (metoprolol tartrate) even though you may not feel quite "normal." Contact your doctor or pharmacist about any new symptoms. Lab tests may be required to monitor therapy. Be sure to keep appointments. Do not stop taking Lopressor (metoprolol tartrate) without checking with your doctor. Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your doctor. This includes any herbal preparations or dietary supplements. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Lopressor (metoprolol tartrate). If a dose is missed, you should only take the next scheduled dose. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Store Lopressor (metoprolol tartrate) between 59 to 86 degrees F. Protect from light and moisture.
