How should I take Lotensin (benazepril)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Lotensin (benazepril) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Swallow Tablet whole. Do not crush or chew. If you are currently taking a water pill (diuretic), low blood pressure can occur after the first dose of Lotensin (benazepril). To lessen the chance of low blood pressure, discontinue taking the water pill 2 to 3 days before taking Lotensin (benazepril). Then, if blood pressure is not controlled by Lotensin (benazepril) alone, you can begin taking the diuretic again. If the water pill cannot be discontinued, a lower dose of Lotensin (benazepril) should be used to avoid excessive low blood pressure. For patients who have kidney problems, a lower starting dose is recommended. The dose can be adjusted upward until blood pressure is controlled or the maximum total daily dose is reached A persistent, nonproductive cough may occur. Tell your doctor if this occurs. Recovery is rapid when the medication is stopped. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, become pregnant, are planning to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding. Patients being treated for high blood pressure often feel tired or rundown for a few weeks after beginning taking blood pressure medications. Continue taking your medication even though you may not feel quite "normal". Contact your doctor or pharmacist about any new symptoms. Dizziness or lightheadedness may occur if you stand up too fast from a lying or sitting position. If this occurs, get up slowly and avoid sudden changes in posture. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Do not stop taking Lotensin (benazepril) without checking with your doctor. Do not take more medication than prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
