What are the side effects of Macrodantin (nitrofurantoin)?

Most severe: Chest pain; shortness of breath; yellowing of the skin or eyes; tingling; numbness of the fingers and toes; severe diarrhea and cramps.
|
|
Most common: Nausea; vomiting; loss of appetite; weakness; dizziness; headache; drowsiness; general body discomfort; rash; itching; chills.
|
|
Other: Confusion; depression; hair loss; abdominal pain.
|
How should I take Macrodantin (nitrofurantoin)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Macrodantin (nitrofurantoin) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Take Macrodantin (nitrofurantoin) with food. You may be able to take this formulation of the medication without nausea. If you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, yellowing of the skin and eyes, tingling, numbness or burning of the fingers and toes, or severe diarrhea and cramps, contact your health care provider or health care provider at once. Do not use magnesium-containing antacids while taking Macrodantin (nitrofurantoin). Continue to take all of Macrodantin (nitrofurantoin) until all has been taken. Failure to take all of the medication may allow the infection to return. Macrodantin (nitrofurantoin) may cause a brown discoloration to the urine. Do not stop taking Macrodantin (nitrofurantoin) without checking with your health care provider. Macrodantin (nitrofurantoin) may cause dizziness or drowsiness; patients should observe caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider or health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Macrodantin (nitrofurantoin). Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medicine without talking with your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider or pharmacist.
