Most severe:  Severe allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips, face, tongue, and throat); ringing in the ears.
Most common:  Adults: Stomach pain; nausea; vomiting; headache; diarrhea; weakness; loss of appetite; dizziness. Children: Vomiting; itching; headache; stomach pain.
Other:  Rash.

How should I take Malarone (atovaquone/proguanil)?

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated, your age, and weight. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Malarone (atovaquone/proguanil) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. When using for malaria prevention, start taking Malarone (atovaquone/proguanil) 1 to 2 days before going to a malaria-infested area and continue to take daily during the stay and for 7 days after return. Take Malarone (atovaquone/proguanil) at the same time each day with food or a milky drink. Take another dose of Malarone (atovaquone/proguanil) if vomiting occurs within 1 hour after taking a dose. Talk with your doctor about persistent diarrhea or vomiting. Talk with your doctor about alternative treatments for prevention of malaria if Malarone (atovaquone/proguanil) is stopped for any reason. Wear protective clothing and use insect repellents and bednets to lessen the possibility of getting malaria. Pregnant women who are infected with malaria are more likely to suffer serious complications. The risks and benefits should be discussed with a health care provider. Seek immediate medical attention if fever occurs during or after your return from a malaria-infested area. Malarone (atovaquone/proguanil) may cause dizziness. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity.
