What is Maxalt (rizatriptan) used for?

Maxalt (rizatriptan) is used to treat acute migraine headache with or without aura (flashing lights, wavy lines, dark spots) in adults. It should not be used to prevent migraines or cluster headaches.

When should Maxalt (rizatriptan) not be taken?

Do not take Maxalt (rizatriptan) if you are allergic to any ingredient in Maxalt (rizatriptan) you have a history of heart disease or heart attack you have had a stroke or chest pain you have uncontrolled high blood pressure you have other types of migraine headaches (hemiplegic, basilar, or cluster headaches) you have used ergot-containing medications or another medication similar to Maxalt (rizatriptan) within 24 hours you are currently taking or have taken a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor within the last 14 days

What precautions should I follow when taking Maxalt (rizatriptan) ?

Before using Maxalt (rizatriptan), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any other prescription medicine (especially propranolol), or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement if you have a family history of heart disease or heart problems if you have high blood pressure if you have high cholesterol if you smoke if you are overweight if you have phenylketonuria if you have diabetes if you are a female past menopause or who has had a hysterectomy if you are a male over the age of 40 if you are receiving kidney dialysis if you have impaired liver function if you have any other medical condition

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Maxalt (rizatriptan)?

Maxalt (rizatriptan) should be used only for typical migraine headaches. Maxalt (rizatriptan) is not recommended for any other type of headache, or for unusual types of migraine such as hemiplegic or basilar migraine. Maxalt (rizatriptan) can cause irregular heart beat, heart attack or stroke in people with risk factors for heart disease or disease of blood vessels

What are the side effects of Maxalt (rizatriptan)?

Most severe:  Chest pain, tightness, heaviness, or pressure; severe allergic reactions (rash; giant hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue).
Most common:  Dizziness; drowsiness; weakness; tiredness.
Other:  Headache; pain, tightness, or pressure in the throat, neck, or jaw; abnormal skin sensations; pain; dry mouth; nausea.

How should I take Maxalt (rizatriptan)?

How much medicine you take and how often it is taken depends on many factors, including the condition being treated, your age, and weight. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Maxalt (rizatriptan) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Carefully read the information provided with Maxalt (rizatriptan) and reread it each time you get this prescription refilled. Take Maxalt (rizatriptan) exactly as prescribed by your health care provider. Maxalt (rizatriptan) is intended for the relief of acute migraine attacks. It does not prevent or reduce the number of attacks. Use Maxalt (rizatriptan) only for acute migraine attacks. It is not necessary to take Maxalt (rizatriptan) with liquid. These Tablet are packaged in a blister with an outer aluminum pouch. Do not remove the blister from the outer pouch until you are ready to take Maxalt (rizatriptan). Peel the blister pack open with dry hands and place the tablet on your tongue. The tablet will dissolve and it can be swallowed with saliva. Take a single dose of Maxalt (rizatriptan) as soon as migraine symptoms appear. A second dose may be taken if there is only a partial response or symptoms of the migraine return. However, do not take it sooner than 2 hours following the first dose. Do not take more than 30 mg in a 24-hour period. Contact your health care provider at once if pain, tightness, heaviness, or pressure in the chest, throat, neck or jaw occurs. The safety for treating an average of more than 4 headaches in a 30-day period has not been established. Diabetes patients -- Maxalt (rizatriptan) may affect your blood sugar level. Your doctor may need to change the dose of diabetes medicine you are taking. Maxalt (rizatriptan) may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Do not take Maxalt (rizatriptan) if you are currently taking or have taken an MAO inhibitor within the last 2 weeks. If you are uncertain whether any of your other medicines contain an MAO inhibitor, check with your health care provider. Patients with other medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Maxalt (rizatriptan). Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Contact your health care provider at once if you feel you have taken too much of Maxalt (rizatriptan). Do not take any over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. This includes any herbal preparations or dietary supplements. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised to by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider.

How should Maxalt (rizatriptan) be stored?

Store Maxalt (rizatriptan) at room temperature (between 59 and 86 degrees F). Keep in the blister with the outer aluminum pouch until ready to use.
