What is Mesasal (5-ASA) used for? |
Mesasal (5-ASA) is used to treat mild to moderate inflammation of the colon (ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease) and to prevent symptoms from returning.

When should Mesasal (5-ASA) not be taken?
|
Do not take Mesasal (5-ASA) if you are allergic to any ingredient in Mesasal (5-ASA) or similar medications you are allergic to salicylates (eg, aspirin) |
What precautions should I follow when taking Mesasal (5-ASA) ?

Before using Mesasal (5-ASA), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement if you have pyloric stenosis if you have or have a history of impaired kidney function if you are allergic to sulfasalazine if you have any other medical condition |
What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Mesasal (5-ASA)?

This medicne should be taken before meals and at bedtime with fluids. Do not chew, break or crush Mesasal (5-ASA) being swallowing. This medicne should be administered with extreme caution to patients with impaired renal or hepatic function. |
What are the side effects of Mesasal (5-ASA)?
|

Most severe: Cramps; sudden stomach pain; bloody diarrhea; fever; headache; rash; worsening of colon inflammation; chest pain; rectal bleeding.

|
Most common: Belching; pain; nausea; sore throat; dizziness; weakness; diarrhea; back pain; chills; indigestion; joint pain; vomiting; constipation; gas; painful menstruation; flu; swelling of the legs and feet; muscle aches; sweating; itching; runny nose; stomach bloating; anxiety; bronchitis; ear disorder; ear pain; infection (chills; sore throat); joint disorder; migraine; nervousness; abnormal skin sensations; sinus inflammation; changes in bowel color; painful stools or urination; frequent urination; abnormal vision.

Other: Acne; increased cough; general body discomfort; arthritis; swelling around the eye area; sleeplessness.

How should I take Mesasal (5-ASA)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depend on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Mesasal (5-ASA) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Carefully read the information provided with Mesasal (5-ASA) and reread it each time you get this prescription refilled. Take Mesasal (5-ASA) exactly as prescribed by your health care provider. Swallow Tablet whole. Do not break the outer coating. Mesasal (5-ASA) may cause an acute intolerance syndrome. Stop taking Mesasal (5-ASA) and contact your health care provider at once if cramps, stomach pain, bloody diarrhea, fever, headache, rash, or swelling around the eye occur. Mesasal (5-ASA) may cause dizziness or changes in vision. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Mesasal (5-ASA). Do not stop taking Mesasal (5-ASA) without checking with your health care provider. Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Contact your health care provider at once if you feel you have used too much of Mesasal (5-ASA). Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. This includes any herbal preparations or dietary supplements. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider or pharmacist.
