What is Metamucil (psyllium hydrophilic mucilloid) used for? |
Metamucil (psyllium hydrophilic mucilloid) is used to relieve occasional constipation. A bowel movement usually occurs in 12 to 72 hours.

Before using Metamucil (psyllium hydrophilic mucilloid), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding if you are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medicine or dietary supplements if you have noticed a sudden change in bowel habits that lasts over a period of 2 weeks if you have any other medical condition |

Because of its gradual mode of action, Metamucil (psyllium hydrophilic mucilloid) should be taken for 2 to 3 days to become fully effective. Do not interrupt dosage during this time |
What are the side effects of Metamucil (psyllium hydrophilic mucilloid)?

Most severe: Rectal bleeding; failure to have a bowel movement; chest pain; vomiting; difficulty swallowing or breathing.
|
|
Most common: Bloating; gas.
|
|
Other: Temporary gastrointestinal distress (cramping, flatulence, bloating).
|
How should I take Metamucil (psyllium hydrophilic mucilloid)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depend on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Metamucil (psyllium hydrophilic mucilloid) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Use a dry spoon to measure powder. Take Metamucil (psyllium hydrophilic mucilloid) with a full glass (at least 8 ounces) of water or other fluid. Do not swallow dry. Use the smallest dose that is effective and lower the dosage as improvement occurs. To prepare, place powder in a dry glass, add ½ inch of liquid and stir briskly. Add remainder of liquid, stir, and drink at once. Follow with an additional glass of water if desired. Contact your doctor at once if any of the following occurs: Chest pain; vomiting; difficulty breathing or swallowing. If you have noticed a sudden change in bowel habits that last for more than 2 weeks, consult your health care provider before using Metamucil (psyllium hydrophilic mucilloid). Do not use Metamucil (psyllium hydrophilic mucilloid) for longer than 1 week unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Stop using Metamucil (psyllium hydrophilic mucilloid) and contact your health care provider if rectal bleeding or failure to have a bowel movement occurs. This could a sign of a serious condition requiring immediate medical attention. Consult your health care provider before using Metamucil (psyllium hydrophilic mucilloid) in children under 6 years of age. Do not take any over-the-counter or prescription medications or dietary supplements without talking with your health care provider. Patients with other medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Metamucil (psyllium hydrophilic mucilloid). Do not take more medicine than recommended on package label unless advised to do so by your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised to by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider.
