Methotrexate (methotrexate) should only be given by health care professionals who are experienced with using this type of medication. Methotrexate (methotrexate) can cause or has been associated with fetal death or birth defects, bone marrow suppression, buildup of poison in the stomach or liver, fibrous tissue in the liver, cirrhosis of the liver, lung disease, diarrhea, ulcers, cancer of lymph tissue, severe skin reactions and deadly infections. Be sure to let your health care provider know if you experience any type of illness while taking Methotrexate (methotrexate). |
What are the side effects of Methotrexate (methotrexate)?

Most severe: Abdominal pain and upset, chills and fever, decreased resistance to infection, dizziness, fatigue, general feeling of illness, mouth ulcers, nausea
|

Most common: Stomach ulcer; nausea; stomach pain; general body discomfort; unusual tiredness; chills and fever; dizziness; vomiting; increased risk of bleeding
|

Other: Diabetes, impotence, infection, joint pain, loss of sexual desire, muscular pain, osteoporosis, ringing in the ears, severe allergic reaction, shortness of breath, sleepiness, sudden death, sweating
|
How should I take Methotrexate (methotrexate)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Methotrexate (methotrexate) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. The tablet form of Methotrexate (methotrexate) is the preferred route of dosing when low doses are taken. Contact your health care provider as soon as possible if any of the following occurs: Fever; chills; sore throat; nosebleed; bruising; change in the color of urine; dark stools; red rash; peeling or flaking skin; darkened areas of skin; chest pain or discomfort; difficulty breathing. Drink plenty of liquids while taking Methotrexate (methotrexate). Avoid pregnancy if either partner is taking Methotrexate (methotrexate). Males should take precautions during and for at least 3 months after taking Methotrexate (methotrexate); females should take precautions during and for 1 full menstrual cycle after taking Methotrexate (methotrexate). Methotrexate (methotrexate) may cause sensitivity to light. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight or sunlamps. Use sunscreens and wear protective clothing. Lab tests are required while taking Methotrexate (methotrexate). Be sure to keep appointments. Do not stop taking Methotrexate (methotrexate) without checking with your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Methotrexate (methotrexate). Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider.
