Micronor Birth Control (norethindrone) is used to prevent pregnancy (birth control, contraception). It does not protect against HIV infection or other sexually transmitted diseases. Doctors may occasionally prescribe it for other reasons.

Do not take Micronor Birth Control (norethindrone) if you are allergic to any ingredient in Micronor Birth Control (norethindrone) you are or suspect that you are pregnant you have or suspect that you have breast cancer you have abnormal vaginal bleeding of unknown cause you have liver tumors or liver disease you are actively smoking you are taking medicine for seizures or tuberculosis

Before using Micronor Birth Control (norethindrone), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are breastfeeding if you are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medicine if you have any other medical condition

Women who use Micronor Birth Control (norethindrone) should not smoke. Smoking increases the risk of serious heart problems when used along with birth control pills. There are two different types of birth-control pills: Combination pills and progestin-only pills (POPs). The combination pills contain mixtures of the hormones estrogen and progestin. They appear to prevent pregnancy by preventing ovulation, altering the cervical mucous to inhibit sperm penetration of an egg should one be released, and change the lining of the uterus to prevent implantation of a fertilized egg should fertilization occur. There are three kinds of combination birth-control pills. The monophasic pill has the same dose of estrogen and progestin in each pill. The biphasic and triphasic pills have varying amounts of hormones. It is thought that the biphasic and triphasic pills produce an effect that more closely resembles a woman's normal hormone cycle. Whether this has any specific benefit is unknown. Progestin-only pills (POPs) only contain a progestin. They appear to prevent pregnancy by causing changes in the cervical mucus and the inner lining of the uterus which inhibit sperm from fertilizing the egg and prevent implantation should fertilization occur. POPs may also prevent ovulation in some women.

Other:  Acne; increased body hair growth; weight gain.

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Micronor Birth Control (norethindrone) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Take exactly as directed by your health care provider. Take 1 tablet at the same time every day. Spotting, irregular menstrual cycles, and irregular bleeding episodes may occur. Continue to take Micronor Birth Control (norethindrone). It is best to start your first pill on the first day of your menstrual cycle. If you have had a miscarriage or an abortion, you can start taking Micronor Birth Control (norethindrone) the next day. If you vomit soon after taking the pill, use a backup method (such as condoms or spermicides) for the next 48 hours. Start the next pack the day after the last pack is finished. There is no break between packs. Always have your next pack ready. If you are more than 3 hours late or if you miss 1 or more pills, take a missed pill as soon as possible, then go back to your regular schedule. Be sure to use a backup method of birth control (such as condoms or spermicides) every time you have sexual intercourse for the next 48 hours. If you are not sure what to do about missed doses, continue taking your pills, use a backup method, and contact your health care provider. If you are fully breastfeeding (baby is only taking breast milk), you may start your pills 6 weeks after delivery. If you are partially breastfeeding (baby is also taking food or formula), you should start taking pills within 3 weeks after delivery. If you are switching from the combined pills to Micronor Birth Control (norethindrone) take the first progestin-only pill (POP) the day after you have finished taking the last combined pill. Do not take any of the 7 inactive pills from the combined pill pack. It is normal to have an irregular period after switching to POPs. If you are switching from POPs to the combined pills, take the first active combined pill on the first day of your period, even if your POPs pack is not finished. If you switch to another POP brand, start the new brand at anytime. If you are breastfeeding, you can switch to another method of birth control anytime. However, do not switch to the combined pills until you stop breastfeeding or until at least 6 months after delivery. If you are breastfeeding, POPs will not affect the quality or the amount of your breast milk or the health of the nursing baby. You should have a pregnancy test if your period is late and you were late taking or missed 1 or more pills and had sex without a backup method, or if it has been more than 45 days since the beginning of your last period. Contact your doctor if you suspect that you are pregnant. Micronor Birth Control (norethindrone) does not protect against HIV infection or other forms of sexually transmitted diseases. Be sure to use a backup method (such as condoms) while taking Micronor Birth Control (norethindrone). Contact your health care provider if severe pain in the lower abdomen or stomach area, prolonged episodes of bleeding, or prolonged absence of menstrual flow occurs. These could be a signs of a serious condition requiring immediate attention. Lab tests and doctor's visits are required to monitor therapy. Be sure to keep appointments. Diabetic patients - Micronor Birth Control (norethindrone) may interfere with the control of your blood sugar. Your doctor may need to adjust your dose of diabetes medicine. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Micronor Birth Control (norethindrone).

Store Micronor Birth Control (norethindrone) at controlled room temperature (between 59 and 86 degrees F).
