Nardil (phenelzine) is used to treat long-term mental depression that has not responded to other medications. Doctors may occasionally prescribe it for other reasons.

Do not take Nardil (phenelzine) if you are allergic to any ingredient in Nardil (phenelzine) you have a tumor of the adrenal gland you have a confirmed or suspected defect of the blood vessels in the brain (eg, stroke) you have congestive heart failure you have coronary heart disease you have high blood pressure you have a history of liver disease or severe kidney disease you have headaches or history of headaches

Before using Nardil (phenelzine), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, plan on becoming pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine if you have a history of seizures if you have any other medical condition this medicne should not be used in combination with other anti-depressants or narcotics.

Sudden and fatal increase in blood pressure (hypertensive crisis) has been reported in patients on Nardil (phenelzine). Hypertensive crises during treatment with Nardil (phenelzine) may also be caused by ingestion of foods with a high concentration of tyramine or dopamine like high protein food that has undergone protein breakdown by aging, fermentation, pickling, smoking or bacterial contamination; patients should also avoid cheeses (especially aged varieties), pickled herring, beer, wine, liver, yeast extract (including brewer's yeast in large quantities), dry sausage (including Genoa salami, hard salami, pepperoni and Lebanon bologna), pods of broad beans (fava beans) and yogurt, excessive amounts of caffeine or chocolate.

Other:  Clumsiness. Drug abuse and dependence have been reported in patients using excessive doses of this drug. Some of these patients had a history of substance abuse. The following withdrawal symptoms have been reported: Restlessness; anxiety; depression; confusion; hallucinations; headaches; weakness; diarrhea.

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Nardil (phenelzine) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Dosage may be increased rapidly. You may not see a response to Nardil (phenelzine) for at least 4 weeks. Do not change the dose, discontinue Nardil (phenelzine), or take any other medication, except on the advice of your doctor. Talk with your doctor before taking any other medicine, including nonprescription medications for colds, hay fever, or weight loss while taking a MAO inhibitor. There are a number of food products that you cannot eat or take while taking Nardil (phenelzine). Your health care provider will give you a list of the products. Please follow the list and instructions given to you by your health care provider. Do not drink alcohol while taking Nardil (phenelzine). Nardil (phenelzine) may cause drowsiness or blurred vision. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Dizziness, weakness, or fainting may occur when rising from a lying or sitting position, especially if you are taking high amounts of Nardil (phenelzine). If this occurs, get up slowly. Notify your doctor immediately if you experience headaches that radiate from the back to the front of the head, pounding in the chest, neck stiffness or soreness, nausea, vomiting, sweating (sometimes with fever or cold, clammy skin), widened pupils, sensitivity to light, or changes in heart rate with or without chest pain or pressure. These symptoms may be a sign of a crisis due to an increase in blood pressure. Use of Nardil (phenelzine) may complicate other medical treatment (eg, general anesthesia, surgery). Inform your doctors and dentist about your use of MAOIs. Wear or carry identification saying that you are taking an MAOI. Blood pressure will need to be monitored frequently. Lab tests may be required to monitor therapy. Be sure to keep appointments. Do not stop taking Nardil (phenelzine) without checking with your doctor. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Nardil (phenelzine). Do not take more medication than is prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Store Nardil (phenelzine) Tablet between 59 to 86 degrees F.
