Neurontin (gabapentin) is an anticonvulsant used to treat seizures associated with epilepsy. It may also be used in adults to treat nerve pain following herpes zoster infection or to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

During clinical trials, the most common adverse reactions observed were somnolence, ataxia, fatigue and nystagmus. Refrain from activities requiring mental alertness or physical coordination until yuo are sure that Neurontin (gabapentin) does not affect you adversely.

What are the side effects of Neurontin (gabapentin)?

Most severe:  Allergic reactions (giant hives; rash; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); hostility; memory loss; abnormal thoughts; convulsions; unusual lumps.
Most common:  Drowsiness; dizziness; nausea; swelling of arms and legs; infection (fever, chills, sore throat); clumsiness; tiredness; diarrhea; dry mouth; constipation; tremor; runny nose. Children 3 to 12 years of age: Viral infection; fever; drowsiness; hostility; behavioral problems; abnormal thoughts; mood swings; aggressive behavior; restlessness; hyperactivity; change in school performance.
Other:  Weight gain; sore throat; double vision; ear infection; back pain; dental problems; increased appetite; depression; twitching; coughing; abrasions; itching; impotence; confusion; sleeplessness; rash; acne; rapid eye movements; vomiting; blurred vision; muscle aches; involuntary eye movements; nervousness; disturbed speech. Withdrawal from Neurontin (gabapentin) should be gradual.

How should I take Neurontin (gabapentin)?

How much medicine you take/give and how often you take/give it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Neurontin (gabapentin) you are taking/giving, talk with your health care provider. Take Neurontin (gabapentin) exactly as prescribed by your health care provider. Neurontin (gabapentin) may be taken with or without food. Do not stop taking or giving Neurontin (gabapentin) without checking with your doctor. Do not take or give any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your doctor. This includes and herbal preparations or dietary supplements. Do not take or give more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Contact your health care provider at once if you feel you have taken or given too much of Neurontin (gabapentin). If a dose is missed, take or give it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, restart medication and advise your doctor or pharmacist at your next visit.

Store Neurontin (gabapentin) at room temperature (59 to 86 degrees F). Protect from heat, light and moisture. Keep all medicines out of the reach of children.
