How should I take Nix Dermal Cream (permethrin)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depend on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount andperor frequency of Nix Dermal Cream (permethrin) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Thoroughly massage into the skin from the head to the soles of the feet. It is not necessary to put Nix Dermal Cream (permethrin) on the scalp except in children and older patients. One course of Nix Dermal Cream (permethrin) will usually cure scabies. You may experience itching after treatment. This is not a sign of treatment failure. However, if living mites are seen after 14 days, retreatment is necessary. It is recommended that family members and close contacts, including sexual partners, be treated with Nix Dermal Cream (permethrin) to reduce the risk of transmission or eliminate reinfestation. Thoroughly massage the dermal cream into the skin from the head to the soles of the feet paying particular attention to the areas between the fingers and toes, wrists, axillae (arm pits), external genitalia (external sexual organs) and buttocks. Reapply to the hands if washed off with soap and water within 8 hours of application. It is not necessary to apply a thick visible layer of cream into the skin as it disappears on application. Scabies rarely infests the scalp of adults, although the hairline, neck, temple and forehead may be infested in geriatric patients. Children should be supervised by an adult. The dermal cream should be removed by washing (shower or bath) after 12 to 14 hours. In the majority of individuals, the scabies infestation is cleared with a single application of the cream. If necessary, a second application may be given 7 to 10 days after the first, but only if live mites can be demonstrated or new lesions appear. To prevent reinfestations all clothing and bed linens used within 2 days prior to treatment should be machine-washed in hot water and dried in the dryer for at least 20 minutes, or dry cleaned. Itching, mild burning or stinging may happen with the use of Nix Dermal Cream (permethrin). If irritation continues, talk with your health care provider. Do not allow Nix Dermal Cream (permethrin) to get into the eyes. If this does occur, flush with water at once. Remove Nix Dermal Cream (permethrin) by washing after 6 to 14 hours. Do not stop taking Nix Dermal Cream (permethrin) without checking with your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Nix Dermal Cream (permethrin). Do not take more medicine than is prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider or pharmacist.
