What is Nolvadex (tamoxifen) used for?

Nolvadex (tamoxifen) is used to treat advanced breast cancer in men and women, reduce the incidence of breast cancer recurrence, reduce the incidence of breast cancer in women at high risk for breast cancer, treat breast cancer in postmenopausal women following total or partial breast removal surgery and radiation treatment, and to reduce the risk of breast cancer in women with DCIS (cancer of the breast milk ducts) after breast surgery and radiation.

When should Nolvadex (tamoxifen) not be taken?

Do not take Nolvadex (tamoxifen) if you are allergic to any ingredient in Nolvadex (tamoxifen) you are taking coumarin-type non-blood clotting medication you have a history of deep-vein blood clots or blood clots in the lungs you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant you are under 35 years of age

What are the side effects of Nolvadex (tamoxifen)?

Most severe:  Pain or swelling in the calves; yellowing of the skin or eyes; new breast lumps; sudden vision changes; abnormal vaginal bleeding; unexplained shortness of breath; swelling of face and throat.
Most common:  Hot flashes; absence of menstrual period; changes in menstrual cycle; menstrual spotting; bone pain; fatigue; muscle pain; pain; depression; swelling; vaginal discharge.
Other:  Nausea; cough; weight loss; skin changes; mood swings; constipation; hair loss; abnormal skin sensations; giant hives.

How should I take Nolvadex (tamoxifen)?

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Nolvadex (tamoxifen) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Take Nolvadex (tamoxifen) in divided doses (morning and evening). Swallow Tablet whole with a drink of water. Nolvadex (tamoxifen) may be taken without regard to meals. Barrier or nonhormonal birth control is recommended during treatment in sexually active postmenopausal and premenstrual women. In women of childbearing potential, Nolvadex (tamoxifen) should be started during menstruation. In women with menstrual irregularity, a pregnancy test should be done just before the start of Nolvadex (tamoxifen). Contact your health care provider at once if you suspect that you are pregnant. Contact your health care provider at once if sleepiness, mental confusion, difficulty talking, numbness, pain or swelling of legs, unexplained shortness of breath, coughing up blood, sudden chest pain, changes in vision, new breast lumps, abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge, menstrual irregularities, pelvic pain or pressure, bone pain, hot flashes, nausea, vomiting, weight gain, dizziness, headache, or loss of appetite occurs. Women taking Nolvadex (tamoxifen) to reduce the risk of breast cancer should have a breast exam, mammogram, and a gynecological exam before starting Nolvadex (tamoxifen). Nolvadex (tamoxifen) reduces the possibility of getting breast cancer but it does not eliminate the risk. Bone or tumor pain may occur shortly after starting Nolvadex (tamoxifen) and usually subsides over time. Gynecological and vision exams and lab tests will be required to monitor treatment. Be sure to keep appointments. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Nolvadex (tamoxifen). Do not take more medicine than is prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Do not stop taking Nolvadex (tamoxifen) without checking with your health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider or pharmacist.

How should Nolvadex (tamoxifen) be stored?

Store Nolvadex (tamoxifen) Tablet between 68 to 77 degrees F in a tightly closed, light-resistant container. Do not use after the expiration date.
