Parnate (tranylcypromine) is used for the treatment of major depression.

Do not take Parnate (tranylcypromine) if you are allergic to any ingredient in Parnate (tranylcypromine) or to similar medications, or if you are in danger of a stroke, if you have heart or liver disease, high blood pressure, or a history of headaches, if you have a type of tu

Before using Parnate (tranylcypromine), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, plan on becoming pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking or planning to take any prescription or nonprescription medicine if you have any other medical condition if you have high blood pressure if you are taking MAO inhibitors such as Nardil, antidepressant drugs classified as "tricyclics," such as Anafranil, Elavil, and Tofranil, carbamazepine (Tegretol), cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril) while taking Parnate (tranylcypromine) wvoid the following foods: anchovies, avocados, bananas, beer (including nonalcoholic beer), caviar, cheese (especially strong and aged varieties), chianti wine, chocolate, dried fruits (including raisins, prunes, and figs), liqueurs, liver, meat extracts or meat prepared with tenderizers, overripe fruit, pickled herring, pods of broad beans like fava beans, raspberries, sauerkraut, sherry, sour cream, soy sauce, yeast extracts, yogurt

Parnate (tranylcypromine) can cause low blood pressure, faintness, or drowsiness, so exercise great care when performing potentially hazardous tasks, such as driving a car or operating machinery. This medicne can cause dependence and stopping Parnate (tranylcypromine) can result in withdrawal symptoms like restlessness, anxiety, depression, confusion, hallucinations, headache, weakness, and diarrhea.

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depend on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Parnate (tranylcypromine) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Do not stop taking Parnate (tranylcypromine) without checking with your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Parnate (tranylcypromine). Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider or pharmacist.

Store Parnate (tranylcypromine) at room temperature in a cool dry place, protect from heat and light. Keep all medicines out of the reach of children and pets.
