What is Pentasa (5-ASA) used for? |

Most severe: Cramps; sudden stomach pain; bloody diarrhea; fever; headache; rash; worsening of colon inflammation; inflammation of the pancreas (stomach tenderness; nausea; vomiting; increased pulse rate); rectal bleeding; breathing problems; pounding in the chest.

Most common: Diarrhea; indigestion; loss of appetite; urgency to have a bowel movement; acne; constipation; difficulty swallowing; mouth sores; oral infection; changes in bowel color; thirst; hair loss; dry skin; flushing; nail disorder; sensitivity to sunlight; itching; sweating; hives; depression; dizziness; sleeplessness; drowsiness; abnormal skin sensations; absence of menstrual flow; joint pain; weakness; breast pain; swelling around the eye; leg cramps; general body discomfort; muscle aches; frequent urination; dry, itchy skin; swelling.

How should I take Pentasa (5-ASA)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depend on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Pentasa (5-ASA) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Carefully read the information provided with Pentasa (5-ASA) and reread it each time you get this prescription refilled. Take Pentasa (5-ASA) exactly as prescribed by your health care provider. Swallow tablets whole. Do not crush or chew them. Pentasa (5-ASA) may cause an acute intolerance syndrome. Stop taking Pentasa (5-ASA) and contact your health care provider at once if cramps, stomach pain, bloody diarrhea, fever, headache, or rash occur. Pentasa (5-ASA) may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Pentasa (5-ASA) may cause sensitivity to sunlight. Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and other ultraviolet light (eg, tanning beds). Use sunscreens and wear protective clothing until tolerance is determined. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Pentasa (5-ASA). Do not stop taking Pentasa (5-ASA) without checking with your health care provider. Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Contact your health care provider at once if you feel you have used too much of Pentasa (5-ASA). Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. This includes any herbal preparations or dietary supplements. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider or pharmacist.
