Peridex (chlorhexidine gluconate) is used to kill bacteria in the mouth and to treat inflammation of gums (ginvitis) in patients over 18 years of age.

Peridex (chlorhexidine gluconate) should be spit out after rinsing and never swallowed. Foods may taste different to you for several hours after rinsing with Peridex (chlorhexidine gluconate). In most cases, this effect becomes less noticeable after continued use. Taste should return to normal when treatment with Peridex (chlorhexidine gluconate) is finished. |
What are the side effects of Peridex (chlorhexidine gluconate)?

Most severe:ÿ Swelling of the tongue.
|
|
Most common:ÿ Staining of teeth, dental work, and the tongue; coated tongue; tarter buildup; changes in taste; dry mouth; swelling; abdominal pain; stomach upset or nausea (if swallowed); decreased sensitivity to stimulation; gum disease; abnormal skin sensations.

Other: Stomatitis, gingivitis, glossitis, ulcer, dry mouth, hypesthesia, glossal edema and paresthesia.

How should I take Peridex (chlorhexidine gluconate)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Peridex (chlorhexidine gluconate) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Begin therapy after a thorough cleaning of teeth by a dentist or dental hygienist. Brush your teeth before you use Peridex (chlorhexidine gluconate). Do not swallow Peridex (chlorhexidine gluconate). Spit out after rinsing. Do not dilute. Do not rinse with water or other mouthwash, brush teeth, or eat right after rinsing with Peridex (chlorhexidine gluconate). Taste changes may occur. Use after meals to reduce taste changes. Staining of the teeth may occur. To minimize the color change, brush and floss daily, especially in areas that begin to stain. Dental checkups every 6 months are necessary. Do not stop taking Peridex (chlorhexidine gluconate) without checking with your doctor. Do not take more medication than prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Peridex (chlorhexidine gluconate). Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your doctor. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
