What is Phenergan (promethazine) used for? |
Phenergan (promethazine) is used for the relief of allergy symptoms, including hives and nasal congestion. It is used to prevent and control pain and nausea during and after surgery. It is also used to help produce light sleep, and for the prevention of motion sickness.

When should Phenergan (promethazine) not be taken?

Do not take Phenergan (promethazine) if you are allergic to any ingredient in Phenergan (promethazine) or similar medications you have received large amounts of central nervous system depressants (eg, alcohol, sedative, hypnotics) |
What precautions should I follow when taking Phenergan (promethazine) ?

Before using Phenergan (promethazine), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine if you have any other medical condition |

Due to it's ability to treat nausea and vomiting, Phenergan (promethazine) can mask symptoms of intestinal obstruction or intracranial pressure; thus it is necessary to establish the exact cause of nausea and vomiting before using high doses of Phenergan (promethazine). |
What are the side effects of Phenergan (promethazine)?

Most severe: Drowsiness, dryness of mouth, blurring of vision
|
|
Most common:ÿ Drowsiness; sleepiness; occasional blurred vision; dry mouth; dizziness; rash; nausea; vomiting.
|

Other: Hyperexcitability, nightmares, allergic reactions, including contact dermatitis; photosensitivity; leukopenia.
|
How should I take Phenergan (promethazine)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depend on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Phenergan (promethazine) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Phenergan (promethazine) will be given by your health care provider in a medical setting. Phenergan (promethazine) may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Do not take alcohol and other medicines (eg, narcotics, tranquilizers, sedatives, hypnotics) while you are taking Phenergan (promethazine). Do not use if solution is discolored or contains particles.
