What is Polytar (coal tar) used for? |
Polytar (coal tar) is used to relieve itching, scaling, and flaking due to dandruff, scalp psoriasis, and excessively oily skin.

Do not take Polytar (coal tar) if you are allergic to any ingredient in Polytar (coal tar) if you have acne or folliculitis, if you are sensitive to sunlight |

How should I take Polytar (coal tar)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Polytar (coal tar) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Polytar (coal tar) is for external use only. Apply a liberal amount of shampoo to wet scalp and massage for 3 to 5 minutes. Rinse. Repeat. Rinse again. Use twice weekly or as directed by your health care provider. Avoid contact with eyes. If medicine gets into the eyes, stop use, rinse thoroughly with water, and talk with your doctor. Talk with your doctor if condition worsens, does not improve, covers a large area of the body, or if irritation or allergic reaction occur. Do not use Polytar (coal tar) around the rectum, genital, groin areas, or in combination with any other psoriasis medicine unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Avoid exposing the skin to sunlight for 24 hours after using Polytar (coal tar). Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. Do not use medicine more often than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Polytar (coal tar). If a dose is missed, apply it as soon as possible. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider.
