Ponstan (mefenamic acid) is used to relieve mild to moderate pain in patients 14 years of age and older for up to 7 days. It is also used to treat painful menstruation.

Do not take Ponstan (mefenamic acid) if you are allergic to any ingredient in Ponstan (mefenamic acid) you have experienced asthma, rash, hives, or other allergic type reactions after taking aspirin or other similar medications (eg, ibuprofen) you have active ulcers or chronic inflammation of either the upper or lower intestines you have kidney disease you are in your last trimester of pregnancy

Before using Ponstan (mefenamic acid), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement if you have a history of ulcer disease or intestinal bleeding if you have a history of asthma if you have liver problems if you are dehydrated if you have a history of fluid retention if you have high blood pressure if you have heart problems if you have any other medical condition

Ponstan (mefenamic acid) should be used with extreme caution in patients with asthma, peptic ulceration, gastro-intestinal bleeding and recurrent episodes of diarrhea.

Other:  Fever; infection; changes in weight; anxiety; weakness; confusion; depression; abnormal dreams; drowsiness; sleeplessness; general body discomfort; feeling of a whirling motion; hair loss; sensitivity to sunlight; sweating; blurred vision; changes

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Ponstan (mefenamic acid) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Carefully read the information provided with Ponstan (mefenamic acid) and reread it each time you get this prescription refilled. Take Ponstan (mefenamic acid) exactly as prescribed by your health care provider. Take Ponstan (mefenamic acid) with food. Contact your health care provider if signs or symptoms of stomach bleeding occur or if rash, weight gain or swelling occur. Contact your health care provider if any of the following occurs: Nausea; fatigue; lethargy; itching; yellowing of the skin or eyes; upper right side of the body tenderness; flu-like symptoms (headache; tiredness; muscle aches; fever). Contact your health care provider at once if a severe allergic reaction (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue) occurs while taking Ponstan (mefenamic acid). Women who are pregnant should not take Ponstan (mefenamic acid) during the last trimester of pregnancy, as it may harm the developing fetus. Ponstan (mefenamic acid) may cause drowsiness or changes in vision. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, and physical dexterity. Ponstan (mefenamic acid) may cause sensitivity to sunlight. Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and other ultraviolet (UV) light (eg, tanning beds). Use sunscreens and wear protective clothing until tolerance is determined. Lab tests may be required to monitor therapy. Be sure to keep appointments. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Ponstan (mefenamic acid). Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Contact your health care provider at once if you feel you have taken too much of Ponstan (mefenamic acid). Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medicines without talking with your doctor. This includes any herbal preparations or dietary supplements. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Store Ponstan (mefenamic acid) between 59 to 86 degrees F. Protect from moisture.
