What is Premarin (conjugated estrogen) used for? |
Premarin (conjugated estrogen) is used reduce moderate to severe symptoms of menopause, including feelings of warmth in the face, neck, and chest, and the sudden intense episodes of heat and sweating known as "hot flashes."

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Premarin (conjugated estrogen)?

Because estrogens have been linked with an increased risk of uterine and endometrial cancer (cancer in the lining of the uterus), it is essential to have regular checkups and to report any unusual vaginal bleeding to your doctor immediately. Premarin (conjugated estrogen) should not be used to prevent heart disease. Recent studies have confirmed an increased rate of heart attack, stroke, and dangerous blood clots among women taking estrogen or estrogen combinations for 5 years. Blood clots can lead to phlebitis, stroke, heart attack, a loss of blood supply to the lungs, a blockage in the blood vessels serving the eye, and other serious disorders. |
What are the side effects of Premarin (conjugated estrogen)?

Most severe: Abdominal cramps, abnormal vaginal bleeding, allergic reactions, bloating, blood clots, blood pressure increase, breast cancer or cysts, breast pain or discharge, breast swelling and tenderness, decreased calcium in the blood, depression, dizziness, endometrial cancer, endometrial cell changes, enlargement of benign tumors in the liver or uterus, fluid retention, gallbladder disease, hair loss from the scalp, hives, increased body hair, increased triglycerides, inflammation of the pancreas, intolerance to contact lenses, irritability, itchy spots, joint pain, leg cramps, migraine headache, nausea, mood disturbances, nervousness, ovarian cancer, painful menstruation, sex-drive changes, skin darkening (especially on the face), skin rash or redness, swelling of wrists and ankles, vaginal yeast infection, vomiting, weight gain or loss, worsening of asthma or epilepsy, yellow eyes and skin

How should I take Premarin (conjugated estrogen)?

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depend on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Premarin (conjugated estrogen) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Do not stop taking Premarin (conjugated estrogen) without checking with your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Premarin (conjugated estrogen). Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider or pharmacist.
