What is Prilosec (omeprazole) used for? |
Prilosec (omeprazole) is used for proper healing of stomach and intestinal ulcers (gastric and duodenal ulcers), heartburn, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It is also used in combination with antibiotics for the treatment and eradication of H. pylori bacteria (the cause of most duodenal ulcers).

Do not take Prilosec (omeprazole) if you are allergic to any ingredient in Prilosec (omeprazole) or to similar medications. |
What precautions should I follow when taking Prilosec (omeprazole) ?

Before using Prilosec (omeprazole), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medicine if you have any other medical condition like heart disease, lung disease, impairment of kidney or liver functions. |
What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Prilosec (omeprazole)?

It is very important that Prilosec (omeprazole) be taken regularly and exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Do not stop taking Prilosec (omeprazole) without first talking with your doctor. |
What are the side effects of Prilosec (omeprazole)?

Most severe: Back, leg, or stomach pain, bleeding or crusting sores on lips, blisters, bloody or cloudy urine, chills, continuing ulcers or sores in mouth, difficult, burning, or painful urination, fever, frequent urge to urinate, general feeling of discomfort or illness, joint pain, loss of appetite, muscle aches or cramps, pain, red or irritated eyes, redness, tenderness, itching, burning, or peeling of skin, skin rash or itching, sore throat, sores, ulcers, or white spots on lips, in mouth, or on genitals, unusual bleeding or bruising, unusual tiredness or weakness

Most common: Abdominal or stomach pain

Other: Back pain, chest pain, constipation, diarrhea or loose stools, dizziness, gas, headache, heartburn, muscle pain, nausea and vomiting, skin rash or itching, unusual drowsiness, unusual tiredness

How should I take Prilosec (omeprazole)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depend on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Prilosec (omeprazole) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Do not stop taking Prilosec (omeprazole) without checking with your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Prilosec (omeprazole). Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider or pharmacist.

How should Prilosec (omeprazole) be stored?

Store Prilosec (omeprazole) at room temperature in a cool dry place, protect from heat and light. Keep all medicines out of the reach of children and pets. |
