What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Procan (procainamide)?

Procan (procainamide) can cause serious blood disorders, especially during the first 3 months of treatment. Be sure to notify your doctor if you notice any of the following: joint or muscle pain, dark urine, yellowing of skin or eyes, muscular weakness, chest or abdominal pain, appetite loss, diarrhea, hallucinations, dizziness, depression, wheezing, cough, easy bruising or bleeding, tremors, palpitations, rash, soreness or ulcers in the mouth, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, fever, and chills. |
What are the side effects of Procan (procainamide)?

Most severe: Depression, dizziness, fluid retention, flushing, giddiness, hallucinations, hives, itching, rash, weakness
|
|
Most common: Abdominal pain, bitter taste, diarrhea, loss of appetite, nausea, symptoms similar to those of lupus erythematosus, an inflammatory disease of the connective tissue (joint pain or inflammation, abdominal or chest pain, fever, chills, muscle pain, skin lesions), vomiting

How should I take Procan (procainamide)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depend on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Procan (procainamide) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Do not stop taking Procan (procainamide) without checking with your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Procan (procainamide). Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider or pharmacist.
