Before using Proferrin (heme iron polypeptide), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medicine if you have any other medical condition like heart disease, lung disease, impairment of kidney or liver functions. |
What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Proferrin (heme iron polypeptide)?

Do not use Proferrin (heme iron polypeptide) if you have had an allergic reaction to iron supplements, or if you have a condition called hemachromatosis (iron overload disease) or hemosiderosis (iron in the lungs), or any type of anemia that is not caused by iron deficiency. Proferrin (heme iron polypeptide) may cause your stools to be darker in color. This is normal and is not a cause for concern. |
What are the side effects of Proferrin (heme iron polypeptide)?

Most severe: Bloody diarrhea, bluish-colored lips, hands, or fingernails, chest pain, fever
|
|
Most common: Pale or clammy skin, severe or continuing stomach cramps, vomiting (with or without blood), shallow breathing, weakness, weak but fast heartbeat, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, dark-colored urine
|

Other: Leg cramps

How should I take Proferrin (heme iron polypeptide)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depend on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Proferrin (heme iron polypeptide) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Do not stop taking Proferrin (heme iron polypeptide) without checking with your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Proferrin (heme iron polypeptide). Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider or pharmacist. It is best to take Proferrin (heme iron polypeptide) on an empty stomach, 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. Take Proferrin (heme iron polypeptide) with a full glass or water or fruit juice. If Proferrin (heme iron polypeptide) upsets your stomach, you may take it with food.
