Propylthyracil (propylthiouracil) can lower the activity of the immune system making you susceptible to infections. Avoid contact with people who have colds, the flu, or other contagious illnesses and do not receive vaccines that contain live strains of a virus (e.g., live oral polio vaccine) during treatment with Propylthyracil (propylthiouracil). |
What are the side effects of Propylthyracil (propylthiouracil)?

Most severe: Serious bleeding, anemia, fever, sore throat, coughing, or painful or difficult urination, unusual bleeding or bruising, pinpoint red spots on the skin, nosebleeds, black, bloody, or tarry stools, or blood in urine, unusual tiredness or weakness.

Most common: Headache, nausea or vomiting, skin rash or itching; or muscle aches or pains.
|
|
Other: Abdominal pain, nausea, loss of appetite, yellowing of the skin or eyes, light-colored stools, or dark-colored urine
|
How should I take Propylthyracil (propylthiouracil)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depend on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Propylthyracil (propylthiouracil) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Do not stop taking Propylthyracil (propylthiouracil) without checking with your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Propylthyracil (propylthiouracil). Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider or pharmacist.
