What is Protonix (pantoprazole) used for? |
Protonix (pantoprazole) is used in adults for the short-term treatment and short-term healing/relief of severe inflammation and erosion of the food pipe (esophagus) associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD, or stomach contents rising back into the food pipe). It is also used to control daytime and nighttime heartburn symptoms in patients with GERD.

What precautions should I follow when taking Protonix (pantoprazole) ?

Before using Protonix (pantoprazole), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement if you have severe liver function impairment if you have any other medical condition |

Before starting treatment with Protonix (pantoprazole) for gastric ulcer, exclude out the possibility for gastric malignancy. |
What are the side effects of Protonix (pantoprazole)?

Most severe:ÿ Swelling of the face and throat; difficulty breathing; giant hives; severe skin reactions.
|
|
Most common:ÿ Diarrhea; rash.
|
|
Other:ÿ Mouth, stomach, and abdominal discomfort; changes in vision.
|
How should I take Protonix (pantoprazole)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated, your age, and weight. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Protonix (pantoprazole) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Protonix (pantoprazole) is taken once daily for up to 8 weeks. If you have not responded properly to Protonix (pantoprazole), you may take Protonix (pantoprazole) for an additional 8 weeks. Protonix (pantoprazole) can be taken without regard to meals. Swallow Capsule whole. Do not open, chew, or crush the Capsule. Do not stop taking Protonix (pantoprazole) without checking with your doctor. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Protonix (pantoprazole). Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your doctor. This includes any herbal preparations or dietary supplements. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, restart therapy and advise your doctor or pharmacist at your next visit.
