What is Rifadin (rifampin) used for? |
Rifadin (rifampin) is for the treatment of all forms of tuberculosis and the treatment of some people who have meningitis.

Rifadin (rifampin) has been shown to produce liver dysfunction. Fatalities have been reported that were associated with jaundice in patients with liver disease or receiving Rifadin (rifampin) concomitantly with other hepatotoxic agents. |
What are the side effects of Rifadin (rifampin)?
|
|
Most severe: Hepatotoxicity (impaired liver functions, jaundice, increased blood bilirubin levels)
|
|
Most common: Heartburn; stomach pain or bloating; loss of appetite; nausea; vomiting; yellowing of the skin or eyes; gas; cramps; diarrhea.
|
|
Other: Headache; drowsiness; fatigue; weakness in arms and legs; clumsiness; confusion; fever; vision problems; pain or numbness in the arms and legs.

How should I take Rifadin (rifampin)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Rifadin (rifampin) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Rifadin (rifampin) may produce a reddish coloration of your urine, sweat, saliva, and tears. Rifadin (rifampin) may also permanently stain soft contact lenses. The reliability of oral contraceptives (birth control pills) may be affected. Consider using other birth control methods. Take Rifadin (rifampin) either 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal with a full glass of water. You should take Rifadin (rifampin) at least 1 hour before taking antacids. Notify your health care provider immediately if you experience fever, loss of appetite, general body discomfort, nausea, vomiting, darkened urine, yellowish discoloration of the skin and eyes, or pain or swelling of the joints. You should take all of the medication prescribed by your health care provider. It is important that you do not miss any doses of Rifadin (rifampin). Do not stop taking Rifadin (rifampin) without checking with your health care provider. Do not take more medication than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider or health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider or pharmacist.

Keep container tightly closed. Store Rifadin (rifampin) in a dry place. Avoid excessive heat. |
