What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Rocephin (cefttriaxone)?

Serious, and occasionally fatal hypersensitivity (anaphylactoid) reactions have been reported in patients receiving cephalosporins. The reactions are more likely to occur in persons with a history of sensitivity to multiple allergens. Rocephin (cefttriaxone) should be administered with caution to patients with type I hypersensitivity reaction to penicillin. If an allergic reaction occurs, the administration of Rocephin (cefttriaxone) should be discontinued and appropriate therapy instituted. |
What are the side effects of Rocephin (cefttriaxone)?

Most severe: Severe allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips, face, tongue, and throat); ringing in the ears.

Most common: Diarrhea.
|
|
Other: Rash.
|
How should I take Rocephin (cefttriaxone)?
|
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Rocephin (cefttriaxone) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Rocephin (cefttriaxone) should only be given by a health care provider who is experienced in the use of Rocephin (cefttriaxone). If severe diarrhea, stomach pain/cramps, or bloody stools occur, contact your health care provider at once. This could be a symptom of a serious side effect requiring instant medical attention. Do not treat diarrhea without talking with your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Rocephin (cefttriaxone). Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medicines without talking with your health care provider.

How should Rocephin (cefttriaxone) be stored?

Allow frozen solutions to thaw at room temperature before use. Throw any unused portion. Do not refreeze. |
