What is Salazopyrin (sulfasalazine) used for? |
Salazopyrin (sulfasalazine) is used to treat juvenile arthritis in children and rheumatoid arthritis in patients who have not responded to other medications. It is also used to treat inflammation of the colon (ulcerative colitis, proctitis, Crohn's disease) and to lengthen the time between acute attacks in patients who cannot take the uncoated doseform of Salazopyrin (sulfasalazine).

When should Salazopyrin (sulfasalazine) not be taken?
|
Do not take/give Salazopyrin (sulfasalazine) if you and/or your child you are allergic to any ingredient in Salazopyrin (sulfasalazine) or to similar medications you and/or your child have blockage of the urinary tract or intestines you and/or your child have the blood disease porphyria or aspirin induced asthma urticaria, rhinitis or other allergic manifestations |
What precautions should I follow when taking Salazopyrin (sulfasalazine) ?

Before using Salazopyrin (sulfasalazine), tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you and/or your child are taking any prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement if you and/or your child have impaired liver or kidney function if you and/or your child have severe allergies if you and/or your child have a blood disorder if you and/or your child have asthma if you and/or your child have any other medical condition |
What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Salazopyrin (sulfasalazine)?

This medicne should be used with caution in patients with hepatic or renal damage, blood dyscrasias, severe allergy or bronchial asthma. Pancreatitis has been observed in some susceptible individuals following the use of Salazopyrin (sulfasalazine) |
What are the side effects of Salazopyrin (sulfasalazine)?

Most severe: Allergic reaction (rash; hives; tightness in the chest; difficulty breathing; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); sore throat; fever; pale skin; red or purple spots under the skin; yellowing of the skin or eyes; unusual tiredness;

Most common: Inflammation of the colon: Loss of appetite; headache; nausea; vomiting; stomach pain; infertility and drop in sperm count men (reversible). Rheumatoid arthritis: Nausea; indigestion; rash; headache; stomach pain; vomiting; dizziness; mouth sores; itching.

Other: Chills; fever; change in urination; kidney pain.
|
How should I take Salazopyrin (sulfasalazine)?
|
How much medicine you take/give and how often you take/give it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Salazopyrin (sulfasalazine) you are taking/giving, talk with your health care provider. Carefully read the information provided with Salazopyrin (sulfasalazine) and reread it each time you get this prescription refilled. Take/give Salazopyrin (sulfasalazine) at evenly spaced intervals, preferably after meals, or as directed by your health care provider. Swallow Tablet whole. Do not crush, break, or chew them. Drink plenty of fluids while taking Salazopyrin (sulfasalazine). Drink at least 8 ounces of water with each dose of medicine. Salazopyrin (sulfasalazine) may cause an orange-yellow color of the urine or skin. Talk with your health care provider at once if any of the following occurs: Blood in the urine; yellowing of the skin or eyes; easy bruising; rash; ringing in ears; difficult breathing; fever; pale skin; sore throat; red or purple spots under the skin; chills. Stop taking Salazopyrin (sulfasalazine) and contact your doctor at once if Salazopyrin (sulfasalazine) passes through your bowels undissolved. Contact a health care provider at once if you and/or your child develop diarrhea while taking/giving Salazopyrin (sulfasalazine). Lab tests may be required to monitor therapy. Be sure to keep appointments. Do not stop taking/giving Salazopyrin (sulfasalazine) without checking with your doctor. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking/giving Salazopyrin (sulfasalazine). Do not take/give more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Contact your health care provider at once if you feel you have taken/given too much of Salazopyrin (sulfasalazine). Do not take or give any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your doctor. This includes any herbal preparations or dietary supplements. If a dose is missed, take/give it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, restart medication and contact your doctor or pharmacist.
