What are the side effects of Salofalk (5-Aminosalicylic acid)?

Most severe:  Cramps; sudden stomach pain; bloody diarrhea; fever; headache; rash.
Most common:  Stomach cramps/pain/discomfort; gas; nausea; flu-like symptoms; tiredness/weakness.
Other:  Weakness; sleeplessness; sore throat; diarrhea; leg/joint pain; dizziness; bloating; back pain; pain on insertion of enema tip; hemorrhoids; itching; rectal pain; constipation; hair loss; swelling of the legs and feet; urinary tract infection; rectal pain, soreness, or burning.

How should I take Salofalk (5-Aminosalicylic acid)?

How much medicine you use and how often you use it depend on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. Shake bottle well. Remove protective sheath from the applicator tip. Holding the bottle at the neck will not allow the medication to be discharged. The position most often used is to lay on the left side (to help flow into the sigmoid colon), with the lower leg extended and the upper right leg flexed forward for balance. An alternative is the knee-chest position. Gently insert the applicator tip in the rectum pointing toward the naval. Grasp the bottle firmly, then tilt slightly so that the nozzle is aimed toward the back, squeeze slowly to instill Salofalk (5-Aminosalicylic acid). Steady hand pressure will discharge most of Salofalk (5-Aminosalicylic acid). After using, withdraw the bottle and throw it away. Remain in position for at least 30 minutes after using Salofalk (5-Aminosalicylic acid) to allow complete distribution of Salofalk (5-Aminosalicylic acid) internally. Stay in the same position all night if possible. Use Salofalk (5-Aminosalicylic acid) preferably at bedtime. Salofalk (5-Aminosalicylic acid) may cause an acute intolerance syndrome. Do not stop using Salofalk (5-Aminosalicylic acid) without checking with your health care provider. Do not use Salofalk (5-Aminosalicylic acid) more often than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Contact your health care provider at once if you feel you have used too much of Salofalk (5-Aminosalicylic acid). Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. This includes any herbal preparations or dietary supplements. If a dose is missed, use it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider or pharmacist.
